Today at 2pm.

I've only ever seen 3 wholes dug.

Those cages created from the piles, big enough for a 108F building ?

You didn't hear? It's the construction site of a new tower.

They are using Trucks to build it. It's on hold though.

Also some more piling machines, cranes.

As i said never on hold imo, just veeeeery slow progress

I cannot expect any speeding progress during the summer. Its really melting out there and work will stay slow

No, it's just taking a break.
This is one of my favorite projects in Dubai so I do hope it's not still on hold and will eventually be built.
I have a question about all of the building projects in Dubai though if anyone would care to share their thoughts. I looked up the population of Dubai and it's only about 1.4 million people which is a little smaller than where I live in Nashville, Tn. In fact the entire country only has about 4 million people. What I'm getting at is how could such a relatively small city require such a massive amount of office and residential space? I realize that Dubai is looking to the future and is becoming a major center of business but I would think that you would need a huge population of full time residents to occupy all of these buildings. The Burj Al Alam itself is a huge building that would be larger than any building in America that's already constructed although the 1WTC will be taller when it's completed. Are the buildings that are already completed actually filled up with businesses? Just wondering.

Contenders in Burj Al Alam bid rise to eight

Business 24/7

By Sona Nambiar on Sunday, May 31, 2009

Five more contenders are in the lead for the main contract for the Burj Al Alam, it was revealed yesterday by a senor executive from the developers, the Fortune Group.

The project cost has also been revised to Dh2.5 billion from the Dh3.8bn, due to the drop in construction prices.

"The contract is expected to be awarded by June-end," said Syed Muhammad Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Fortune Group, in an exclusive interview with Emirates Business.

"We have five more contractors in the bid from the initial three at the beginning of this year. A consortium from Malaysia, Saudi Oger, Bin Laden Group, ACC and Grocon are now in the race. We have given them some more time to come back with a final quotation." This takes up the list to eight contractors bidding for the project.

He dismissed the rumours that it is cancelled and said that the project will be completed by 2012. It was launched in 2006 in Dubai and the original date of completion was 2009. In an earlier interview in January this year, he had told the paper that the "contract will be awarded in February".

Samsung Engineering, Besix and Arabtec Construction were in the initial race for the contract.

The project cost has also been revised to Dh2.5bn from the Dh3.8bn. "Due to the current market scenario, construction costs have dropped and contractors are willing to work on lower overheads. We expect to complete a floor each in four days," said Ali. "We have also got a good Dh100 million reduction in MEP costs. With the lowering of construction costs, we plan to pass on the discounts to our investors."

Piling has been completed by Middle East Foundations on the 510-metre-high tower, which will reportedly be the tallest commercial tower in the world. The 108-storey building, which has been designed by Nikken Sikkei in the shape of a crystal flower, will be located in the Business Bay area. Arup is the structural engineers on the project.

"Earlier, contractors had many projects. Now they are showing keen interest to finish the project before time," said Ali. "Piling has been completed, approval has been taken and the contractor is mobilising."
