If we took a poll I wonder what people would think regarding the top of this structure.
The hole is I believe to cut wind resistance and everthing above it as an observation deck that will bring in tourist money.

It looks like scaffolding to me but to be honest I'm not really sure what that is. Maybe someone could enlighten us.

yep, it is the remnants of scaffolding that once covered the entire base. Older pictures in the thread showed much more of it.

The old twin-tower design: over 320m, around 70 storeys

If the towers are built this tall, they will block Jinmao Building, if you view them from the Bund. Then the beauty of the Pudong skyline will be partly lost. Because of this, in December 2005 the design was changed to a triple-tower one like this:
Tower 1: 260m, 60 storeys;
Tower 2: 250m, 58 storeys;
Tower 3: 85m.

According to various resources, preparatory work has started for construction of the towers.

Wtf, an even bigger mall at the base? With Super Brand, do they really need another monster shopping centre?

I didn't see the point in doing that.Jin Mao is a new building,so I see no problem if they build towers close to it that will block the views of Pudong.
BTW,the left tower had a better design in he first rendering

Come on, they will only block the view from one angle. There will be less than 100m of bund where you can't see the Jin Mao. The WFC will block the view of the mao from parts of pudong. Who cares?
