I just found out that in the original design, the circle on top had the same diameter as the spheres of Oriental Pearl Tower.

They were intended to mate and produce baby scrapers.

When was the last time Shanghai (or any Chinese city) saw blue sky. There's a thick cloud of choking smog and pollution in virtually every photo I see.

Blue sky? How about yesterday?

But honestly, the place, being an industrial city, is heavily polluted. Sometimes you can't see across the river. China has the administrative fiat (unlike Western democracies) to push through environmental reforms, but does not have the funds to invest heavily in renewables. They're building 27 nuclear stations, but that's only a drop in the bucket.

Every time I have been to Shanghai I have experienced smoggy industrial haze on some days but brilliant clear blue skies on others. Perhaps it depends on the direction of the wind?

Maybe it's just me but I love the way haze and smog makes a city look. It's even more beautiful at night when you have lights reflecting off the low clouds. Also when you see parts of the building lost in the clouds it kinda gives you a perspective of how tall the building is.

i think its not totally correct to measure the air quality from those pics,, anyway, Shanghai is near ocean, when the clound is not that thick, the dust will be blow to somewhere else,(sure, its still exist ),,so air in shanghai is clearn or not clearn, depends on the weather sometimes.

despite the sandstorm in Beijing, I find Shanghai is getting worse in terms of air quality.

I have always found that shanghai is better than Beijing in terms of air quality. But, credit where credit's due, the authorities in Shanghai (and Beijing) do seem to be making an effort. If it is getting worse, it's getting worse at a slower rate than it could be! (Although i'm not looking forward to the day that everyone in Shanghai and Beijing has a car!!)
