Ordnance Survey plans to stick with St James' Park

by Adrian Pearson, Evening Chronicle Apr 17 2012

Quote:
A NEWCASTLE MP has secured official backing for the St James’ Park name – from Government map makers.

Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah has won official confirmation from the chief executive at Ordnance Survey that as far as they are concerned, the Sports Direct name is temporary.

In a letter to the Labour MP, Government mapping boss Vanessa Lawrence said they will defer to local opinion when deciding on when to use the Sports Direct Arena name favoured by Mike Ashley.

It follows a previous Ordnance Survey ruling that St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton was not renamed The Friends Provident St Mary’s Stadium as the move was linked to a finite period of time

Joe Harvey Statue Fund gets boost from Tony Green

.
NEWCASTLE UNITED fans have scored a hat-trick by attracting their third big signing as they raise cash to build a statue of former manager Joe Harvey. Former Magpies’ star Tony Green has donated a shirt and ball signed by World Cup winners Gordon Banks, Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan, to be auctioned off for the Harvey appeal.

Tony came to Newcastle in 1971 on a Ł150,000 part exchange deal involving Keith Dyson – becoming Newcastle’s second most expensive signing, after Malcolm Macdonald, who was signed the previous summer from Luton Town for Ł180,000. Tony, who played for Scotland, got his pals from the 1966 World Cup to sign the ball and shirt after hearing about the Harvey statue plans and he is now donating them to members of the Wallsend-based Fairs Cup Group, set up to remember Newcastle’s glory days, who are wanting a statue of ex-Magpie boss Joe erected in Newcastle.

Tony, 65, who now lives near Blackpool, said: “I sit on the Littlewoods Pools panel along with Gordon Banks and Roger Hunt. Ian Callaghan sits on the Spot the Ball panel so he is in the same offices as us. When I heard of the Fairs Cup boys raising money to get a statue for Joe I got the England shirt and ball signed by Gordon, Roger and Ian so they can be auctioned off.”

Tony was one of Joe’s favourites but his football days ended at the age of 25 after a horrendous tackle by Crystal Palace’s Mel Blyth, only 33 games and three goals into his Magpie career. He had suffered a cartilage injury, and never played professionally again.

Outside of the recent "regular Top 4" (Man U / Liverpool / Arsenal / Chelsea) qualifiers, Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League since the Champions League format started, more than any other Premier League club.

So, yes, it will be nice to be back in it again . . . if it happens.

Absolutely brilliant that these fans are trying to get a statue for the great Joe Harvey...if anyone deserves it it's him!...Bobby Robson and Shearer won nothing for Newcastle yet Shearer has a pbar named after him and Robson has a bust in the main foyer. Joe was a winner as a player and Manager!

Great to see that happening

Noticed yesterday that all the decorative facing had been removed from the plinth and from picture above can see why - move of statue and plinth in one operation

These pictures by myself 13/04/12 in now " former" location

Hope the engraving is to be reworked as was near impossible to read when picture above taken

Or is there to be a new dedication

Either way "Welcome back Jack"

Relocation of "Wor Jackie" at SJP 23/04/12

Three pictures (hosted on Photobucket) taken by myself 23/04/12 approx 1415 showing ongoing work to re-erect Jackie Milburn statue at paved corner diagonally opposite The Strawberry pub

According the the Cityworks lads, the front engraved facing unit was "on the wagon" without any work having been carried out and to be reattached to concrete existing plinth bock that came across still attached to the bronze

As mentioned in my previous post hope it gets some attention once it is in place

Brazil and Spain to play at St James' Park in Olympics
By Colin George, Evening Chronicle, April 23rd 2012

BRAZIL, Spain and Mexico are coming to Toon after the seeds for the Olympic football tournament were announced. The Great Britain’s men’s team will avoid the trio after also being named as seeds for tomorrow’s draw. The four countries have each been seeded for the 16-team tournament which means they will be kept apart for the group stage.

Fifa's Olympic organising committee decided on the seedings, and the draw will also keep apart the European teams and the countries from Latin America. Britain’s women’s team have also been seeded for that competition, involving 12 countries, along with the United States and Japan.

In the men's tournament, Great Britain will be in Group A and play their matches at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday July 26, followed by Wembley Stadium on Sunday July 29 and Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Wednesday August 1. Spain are seeded on the basis of being world champions and will play in Glasgow (July 26), Newcastle St James' Park (July 29) and Manchester (Aug 1).

Brazil are seeded as the "all-time top Olympic performer" despite never winning the competition, and will be in Group C playing in Cardiff (July 26), Manchester (July 29) and Newcastle (Aug 1). Mexico are seeded as the highest-ranked country outside of Europe and South America, and will be in Group B playing in Newcastle (July 26), Coventry (July 29) and Cardiff (Aug 1).

St James' Park Olympic football fixtures confirmed
By Andrew Fowler, Evening Chronicle, April 24th 2012

Olympic Football fans now know which fixtures from the London 2012 olympics will be played at St James' Park, after the draw at Wembley Stadium today.

The confirmed dates, teams and times for the St James' Park fixtures are now confirmed as:

July 26 - 14:30 - Mexico v South Korea
July 26 - 17:15 - Gabon v Switzerland

July 29 - 17:00 - Spain v Honduras
July 29 - 19:45 - Japan v Morocco

August 1 - 14:30 - Brazil v New Zealand

August 4 - 17:00 - Winner C v Runner-up D

Senegal were the final team to qualify for the tournament following a 2-0 play-off win over Oman on Monday and have been drawn against Team GB for their opening game at Old Trafford on July 26 (19.45 KO).

This is particularly important for Newcastle United fans, who see their beloved Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse linked with the Senegalese squad - officials from the national team played down these reports after the victory over Oman however.

David Luckes, sporting director of LOCOG believes today's draw will be a big help in shifting a large proportion of the 1.5million tickets that remain unsold.

The 'new plinth' is going to be for a statue of Sir Bobby Robson, to be unveiled before the Man City game...

http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20120...281670_2749603

Quote:
Newcastle United will unveil a statue of former manager Sir Bobby Robson ahead of their final home game of the season against Manchester City on Sunday, 6th May.

Standing at nine-and-a-half feet tall, the bronze sculpture will stand at the South-West corner of the Club's stadium. The unveiling ceremony will take place at 10.30am, before the Barclays Premier League clash.
Former players and staff who played under and worked alongside Sir Bobby will be in attendance, as well as current manager Alan Pardew and his backroom team.

Also present among the guests will be Lady Elsie Robson and her family, together with representatives from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the sculptor, Tom Maley.

The statue was commissioned by the Club last autumn and pays tribute to the former Newcastle United and England manager, who spent five years in charge at United between 1999 and 2004.
During his spell at the Club, Robson twice led Newcastle into the Champions League and cemented three consecutive top-five finishes in the Premier League.
He also guided the Magpies to the semi-final of the UEFA Cup during the 2003/04 season and oversaw some of the most memorable nights in the Club's modern history against European giants Juventus, Inter Milan and Feyenoord.
Derek Llambias, Managing Director at Newcastle United, said: "We're delighted to be able to honour Sir Bobby Robson with this lasting tribute.

"He was a great man and ambassador for this football club and for the city. He achieved great success during his time as manager of Newcastle United and this statue is a fitting way for the Club to remember him."
Lady Elsie Robson added: "It's very fitting that there will be a tribute to Bob outside Newcastle United's ground. This is where his love of football began.

"As a boy he'd come here with his dad and he likely queued to get into the ground where the statue will be sited.
"My husband's career took him all over the world but he was always a Newcastle fan at heart. He loved this Club and was very proud to be its manager.

"I think the statue design is wonderful and I'm very grateful to Newcastle United for funding it."

Yes certainly a round of applause, good to see that NUFC can do some things right at St James's Park but they kept it very secret didn't they.

NUFC reveal plans for a Sir Bobby Robson Statue
by Dan Warburton, Evening Chronicle, April 26th 2012

TOUCHING plans to honour Newcastle United legend Sir Bobby Robson can be revealed today. A life-size statue will be built at St James’ Park in tribute to the ex-Toon boss, who managed the club for five years, and the nine-and-a-half-foot sculpture, cast in bronze, will be officially unveiled in a ceremony attended by his widow, Lady Elsie Robson.

Today she paid tribute to her late husband and thanked those who had been behind the plans. She said: “It’s very fitting that there will be a tribute to Bob outside Newcastle United’s ground. This is where his love of football began. As a boy he’d come here with his dad, and he likely queued to get into the ground where the statue will be sited."

“My husband’s career took him all over the world, but he was always a Newcastle fan at heart. He loved this club and was very proud to be its manager. I think the statue design is wonderful, and I’m very grateful to Newcastle United for funding it.”

The bronze sculpture will stand at the south west corner of the club’s stadium and will be officially unveiled ahead of their final home game of the season against Manchester City on Sunday May 6.

When (if ever) will they proceed with increasing the capacity to 60k? Didn't they get planning permission for this a few years back?

Sports Direct Arena is a pretty nice stadium. The city is quite fortunate to have two such splendid facilities in the Stadium of Light and SDA.

Ouch!

The people of Sunderland will not thank you for that comment.

Nor the people of Newcastle, I suspect!
