The white metal supports in the middle are for the walkway I'm guessing.

yup. but i'm not sure how effective it'll be, especially if it's a packaged train traveling at maximum design speed. it looks a lot like a concrete sidewalk curb.

TransLink ticket expiry times to stay in force

Oct 12 2007

A move to extend how long transit tickets are valid has fizzled.

Vancouver Coun. Peter Ladner wanted the expiry time for proof-of-payment tickets increased from 90 minutes to two hours.

He argued the current valid time for a ride sometimes isn’t enough to cover a long trip on the system, especially if congestion is heavy.

TransLink staff reject the idea, saying a wider window of time would cut into TransLink revenues and give much more opportunity to illegal ticket-flippers, who resell discarded but still valid tickets, often for drug money.

It would also have required reprogramming ticket vending machines at a cost of $100,000.

TransLink has had only 34 formal complaints in the past two years about the 90-minute ticket time.

“This issue does not seem to be a major concern to most customers,” a staff report said.

It also notes TransLink’s planned move to a smart card payment system in the next few years will likely bring in an entirely new fare structure that would eliminate current zones and instead charge based on actual distance travelled.

Transit riders may also have more time to use tickets than many realize.

“The proof of payment is still valid as long as the passenger boards the last link of their trip before 90 minutes,” the report says, noting someone could board SkyTrain or a bus 85 minutes after buying or validating the ticket, then legally ride for another 40 minutes for a total trip of more than two hours.

In addition, there’s also a six-minute grace period, so passengers can board as late as the 96-minute mark.

We've heard about the smart card program for quite awhile, but hardly any details about it except that it was to be called "ORCA" or One Card For All until Seattle stole our name because Translink was too slow to go ahead with this program.

I remember reports that said the card would be in operation in 2009, but obviously it won't be ready for many more years. What's exactly a "few" years? 5? 10?

I hate that word.

yea, i agree. there's so much information and many pics of this project, it's overwhelming. compared to other projects posted here in this forum, it's unprecedented.

thus, why in the first post i said: Here, you will find the most indepth information resource of the construction of an rapid transit rail line at Skyscrapercity

By the way Mr. X, on one of the threads in the Skyscraperpage forum, you mentioned that you had a meeting with one of the top guys in charge of the Canada Line project during the summer. (You mentioned that the Canada Line won't be branded as "SkyTrain")

Would you mind sharing some interesting things you discussed about?

In order to move to a distance travelled fare system with a proof of payment system, they'll have to use the swipe stands/kiosks at each station like they do on the light rail system in Hong Kong's New Territories (KCR Streetcar). That's feasible as they could be placed near the ticket machines and would not impede passenger flow (like turnstiles).

from this weeks WE

haha

I’ve been a daily commuter on the SkyTrain and buses for quite awhile. It has just been literally making me sick — these people who are let on the bus are nothing but lowlifes. I was once puked on by some jerkoff who didn’t have the sense to turn away from the nearest person. Just last week, some drunken lowlife lady decided to projectile vomit on everything. What’s wrong with all these degenerate, unemployed wasters? Do they feel that the bus is their own vomitorium? Another thing that has angered me in a nauseating way is those types who haven’t showered or worn clean clothes in so long that the smell comes off them in layers. Do these lowlifes know they smell like the Hastings alley they woke up in, or do they just feel they have to make the rest of us smell their misery?

i still don't get how the distance ticket thing works in Vancouver.

I understand in Hong Kong MTR: purchase ticket (let's say from Central to Admirlty), then you use the gates. Your ticket will only be accepted at Central and Admirly stations.

But if we use that if they aren't gates but only small machines. How can we enforce it. And it doesn't work too well on our bus system either... =S Hong Kong's bus system is pay X amount of money for riding this bus...

they could have people making sure people use the machine

or once on the train the officers could check peoples tickets ??

even than it would be easy to lie about where you want to get off if you're the type to do that now anyway

If you scan your smart card when you enter the fare paid zone - it would be recorded in the system. The actual fare would be deducted from your card when you exit.

Presumably transit police could scan your smart card to determine whether you scanned it when you entered the system (i.e. it is active in the system - i.e. valid).

The fact that you are not barred from leaving the station if you have an insufficient balance on your smartcard could be a good thing.

In my last trip on my Octopus card in Hong Kong, I transferred from the KCR Rail (cards swiped through turnstiles) to the streetcar (card proximity swiped at post), which is supposed to be free, but the card reader beeped "red/no" and wouldn't accept my Octopus card (insufficient fare left on the card?). I boarded anyways for the short streetcar ride back to the hotel (but apparently the fines are very high for fare evasion).
