Great news, is the proposed soccer stadium just to the east of this or further away?

It's actually immediately east of it, right next door.

Absolutely fantastic! This proposal improves the city in so many different ways. It expands the street grid adding at least hundreds of thousands (if not more) square feet of office and retail space. It also provides the city with a much needed unique landmark type building that will do wonders for the far too many examples of drab architecture that have become all too common in the region. Not to mention a major transportation hub that will rival anything found on the globe; and, given its location, a must see for visitors and locals alike. The gap between the before and after renders are dramatic. (especially the picture of the existing transit connections and the future concourse concept).

No, anywhere but at the harbourfront. The stadium is going to ruin the harbour view.

But this whole transit hub idea is great.

The stadium's perimeter will have a public seawall/walk, so that the view will be even better than before.

The trains are going to be a bit longer right... otherwise it looks like they really are gonna be maxed out capacity wise in a very short time.

Some people around here are betting on that. Looks can be deceiving though. I doubt we'll see any expansion of the trains soon.

When the line opens in 2009, 1/3rd of the station platforms will be 50-metres long while the remaining 2/3rds will be 40-metres long. The Canada Line will run 41-metre long trains (two 20.5-metre cars) in 2009:

(|||||||||||||||||||-|||||||||||||||||||)

The Canada Line has a max. design capacity of 15,000 passengers per hour per direction (pphpd). In 2009, it will open with a capacity of ~8,000 pphpd. More trains will be added to increase frequency, which will resolve the Canada Line's short-term capacity issues.

In the future, automated train control systems could be upgraded to increase frequency even more.

To resolve more longer term capacity issues, all 40-metre platforms will be extended to 50-metres. A 16-metre car will be added to the existing 2-car trains:

(|||||||||||||||||||-||||||||||||||||-|||||||||||||||||||)

That would increase frequency even more.

After 35 years, when the line is really max. out at capacity and when the operating contract with the private sector is over we will spend a few billion to rebuild the line with platforms longer than 50-metres.

Today, there are plans to spend $3-billion to extend 6-kms of the existing 1986-built Expo SkyTrain Line as well as to extend its platforms from 80-metres to ~110-metres. The Expo Line currently has a max. design capacity of ~28,000 pphpd, but with further expansions and computer upgrades it should be able to reach 40,000 pphpd.

You're certainly correct that capacity will be an issue for the Canada Line, but it certainly isn't the end of the world either.

You can't really enjoy any view of where the Stadium is proposed because of the railway, unless ur at Waterfront Park, in which hardly anyone goes there...

Notice those gray tiles? I wonder what they are for. Hopefully they'll install a few lights? =D
Some things I would like to note:
Richmond has a horrible roads for pedestrians - there is little signage for pedestrians navigating through construction. I was on No.3 walking on new open sidewalk and then I figured out it was a dead end X_X"

Bridgeport Station is worst in person than in the pictures. Very sad to say...

First time wakling on Oak Street bridge so I walked on the wrong side of the bridge, couldn't provide you guys pics of the OMC and the trains (oh the trains look better in person =D)

Awesome pictures!

Disappointing station and street designs, however....particularly Bridgeport Station. Some sections being sun roofs would help a lot, that station just screams ominous and sterile.

I think the asphalt pavement at the intersection is just temporary...or at least I hope.

You mentioned 1/3 of the stations would have 50 metre platforms. Which stations are these?

I thought that the Bridgeport station would come out nicer. Overall, it looks like they're rushing to complete the station before the winter Olympics 2010 rather than investing in quality in the system.

It's a little more than 1/3rd:

50-metre platform stations:
- Waterfront
- Vancouver City Centre
- Yaletown-Roundhouse
- Broadway-City Hall (i think so)
- Oakridge-41st
- YVR-Airport
- Brighouse-Richmond Centre

40-metre platform stations
- Olympic Village
- King Edward
- Langara-49th
- Marine Drive
- Bridgeport
- Aberdeen
- Lansdowne
- Templeton
- Sea Island Centre

Nermind rushing Bridgeport, they're rushing the entire construction of the line.

There isn't an intercity train network connecting Kelowna, Kamloops, and Seattle already? Surely, BC has had that for decades already.

No demand. I don't think there's even a proper rail line through Kelowna.

We probably don't need one everyday, but then I would like them to start off with some kind of rail service. Toursim and develop of BC interior will grow dramatically!
