There doesn't seem to have been much discussion of the proposed Vancouver streetcar network recently. Has that idea gone into hibernation, or are studies still ongoing?

The entire Skytrain system is grade-separated and runs like other mass transit systems.
Only difference is the capacity per train sets I believe

I guess this is interesting - Surrey is south of Vancouver:

Canadian city plans first light rail line
Tuesday, November 18, 2014

THE newly-elected mayor of Surrey, the second-largest city in the Canadian province of British Columbia, has pledged to construct the city's first light rail line within four years

Following her election victory on November 15, Mrs Linda Hepner, who was formerly the city's economic development officer, told reporters: "You're going to see light rail on the ground in 2018. I am incredibly confident. We have got to connect this city."

In her campaign, Hepner pledged to construct a C$ 2bn ($US 1.8bn) 10km starter line linking Guildford with central Surrey and Newtown. A second 16.8km phase would extend the line east to Langley. Funding sources have yet to be determined, though Hepner suggests a public-private partnership could be an option.

Surrey's light rail plans are included in the Metro Vancouver Transport Plan, which was published in June, although some residents are still calling for the extension of Vancouver's Skytrain Expo Line to the city. Hepner has objected to Surrey paying $C144m to regional transport authority TransLink without seeing benefits, such as the Skytrain extension, which remains a distant prospect.

The biggest waste of money in history

Skytrain extension from King George terminus to Langley is the only reasonable option.

What's the projected ridership for this segment? And is it replacing any high capacity bus routes? Other than some scattered highrises, the area looks pretty low density and suburban...

don't let the look fool you, behind those trees there are close to 200,000 living in the area and I'm not even counting Port Coquitlam and north eastern Burnaby and thats already half of the pop of the greater halifax region.

Halifax?

My, but that's a long Metro.

Do they carry sleeping cars?

In a suburban area, the number of people isn't terribly indicative of the demand for mass transit. If there's low population density and suburban planning, the majority often drive.

They're projecting 70 000 passengers/weekday in 2021 (for comparison the non-shared section of the Millennium Line carries ~80 000 passengers/weekday today). The 97 B-Line bus that now serves the area carries ~11 000 passengers/weekday (although its' route is quite different from the Evergreen Line between Port Moody and Coquitlam). So 7 times the current ridership. Well, good luck with that I guess.

Those are pretty impressive numbers. If it manages to achieve target that would be pretty awesome! Fingers crossed...

B.C. government backs PST hike to fund transit
Tuesday, January 6, 2015

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark is shown in Vancouver on Thursday, September 11, 2014, photo by Darryl Dyck/THE CANADIAN PRESS

The BC Liberal government has announced it supports the “Yes” side in the upcoming transit referendum, and that the proposed PST hike may not apply to all goods.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said the province backs raising the PST 0.5 per cent in Metro Vancouver to fund billions in new projects, but it won’t be funding any part of the “Yes” campaign.

“Provincial government funding will be dedicated solely to enabling and ensuring that the plebiscite takes place” Stone said in a statement.

The government has also tweaked the language of the referendum to read that the tax will apply to “the majority of goods and services” subject to PST, not all

I just wish these types of structures weren't so ugly. Not only do they look big and bulky, but the colour is very bland and they tend to weather poorly and become stained with streaks and blotches.
