Japan broadcast network plans on building the world's tallest tower!!!

TOKYO - Japan's major broadcast networks are in the final stages of choosing a location in the capital to build the tallest tower in the world, a Japanese newspaper reported Tuesday.

The tower, estimated at 1,980 feet, will cost about 50 billion yen (US$420.17 million), the national Yomiuri newspaper said. It is scheduled for completion in 2011.

Officials from Japan's public broadcaster NHK and five Tokyo-based commercial broadcasting companies are involved in the project.

Kinji Terada, a spokesman of NHK, said officials are now "in a final stage of coordination" in the selection of a location for the tower in Tokyo's old entertainment area in Sumida ward.

The tallest structure in the world is now the CN Tower in Toronto, which rises 1,815 feet, largely because of a huge antenna.

Burj Dubai is going to be so tall. Great news.

Nice.

But what would the purpose of this tower be??? (aside from being a tourist observation deck and such)

Just for broadcasting/transmitting TV signals?

Yay

Well I too didnt expect this... how do they know if its going to be the worlds tallest tower? Isnt Burj Dubai's height unknown.. or does that not classify as a tower?

Ahh well, looking forward to renders, hopefully it will look better than the sumida tower or whatever its called.

This has been on the cards for quite a while now. I think I first read about it early last year, and it was old news even then.
Go to http://www.skyscraperpage.com and type "tokyo" if you want a rendering.

It will be interesting to see how it withstands one of those magnitude 7.+ earthquakes that seem to hit Japan on a regular basis.

Ah, I thought this was an actual building, not a communication tower. The article doesn't really make it clear. I guess it could be either.

It's official name is "Sumida Tower" and will be a communications tower, mainly for televsion, radio and other forms of airwave communications. Thus saving confusion with skyscrapers

BTW It will actually be 610m/2,001ft, and not as NewPortRicheyGuy initially posted, estimated @ 1,980 feet, which would only be approx. 603.5m, but close enough

But what are the blue doughnutty things... they look like they could be observation decks? Its seems a waste to build such a tall structure slapbang in the middle of Tokyo and not put an observation deck on it.

It seems an odd location, transmission towers are usually on hills overlooking cities
