San Francisco skyscraper climber gets community service, no jail time for Labor Day stunt
2 February 2011

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The 55-year-old man who scaled a San Francisco skyscraper on Labor Day will not serve jail time for the stunt.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Daniel "Spider Dan" Goodwin was sentenced Tuesday to 100 hours of community service and two years of probation, during which he is prohibited from climbing any more buildings in San Francisco.

He also was ordered to pay a $260 fine and an undetermined amount of restitution to the city fire and police departments.

Goodwin spent about four hours on Sept. 6 scaling the 60-story Millennium Tower, aided by suction cups. He has said he wanted to call attention to what he sees as a national lack of preparedness to fight skyscraper fires.

A jury last month found him guilty of public nuisance and resisting arrest.

"Spiderman" climbs world's tallest building

DUBAI, March 29 (Reuters) - A French daredevil urban climber has scaled the world's tallest building, the 828-metre (2,717-foot) Burj Khalifa in Dubai, fighting winds that delayed his ascent for hours.

Alain Robert, 48, who is also known as the French Spiderman, took about six hours to climb the more than 160-storey building, using a rope and harness as required by organisers.

But he said the safety precautions and the attention from a crowd that had gathered to watch made him more nervous.

"Actually there is huge pressure on me because I know that they have installed everything there; this is for me. There is a giant screen, 50 metres high, 30 metres long. I know everybody is going to look at me so it's a bit of -- a lot of -- stress in fact," Robert said before Monday's climb.

Robert has been arrested many times in various countries as authorities rarely give permission for his dangerous climbs.

Robert first climbed a building at the age of 12 when he got locked out of his apartment and decided to mount the eight stories up to an open window.

He has since climbed more than 80 buildings around the world including Chicago's Sears Tower and Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
