Alex, I HAVE lived in Brazil, in both Sao Paulo (Jardins and Praca da Arvore) and Rio (Ipanema, I was working with Ivo Pitanguy in Botafogo). I am a doctor and so naturally associated with doctors and other professional people from the 'wealthy classes'. But I also spent quite a bit of time in the favelas of Rio, particularly Rocinha, because I knew someone who used to live there but had now moved out.

Brazil has the 4th higest income disparity in the world if i remember correctly. That is what I DONT what Angola to turn into.

Here are a few things that got under my skin

Into the bargain, another member accused me of supporting Dos Santos and Obiang which is certainly NOT THE CASE!

So, It all boiled up within me and I felt "forced" to post some of the slums pics which I uploaded for my personal interest over the time on my PC, just to refute it all and please some people (I am not alluding to you here in particular)! So nobody can piss at me any longer! Here is the other facette of Angolan society but I still clink to the view that this ugly facette will diminish more and more in the coming years and decades, you canīt wipe it all out within five years of formal peace and 2-3 years of actual reconstruction., letīs be realistic. Some cities in Angola ressemble Germany of 1945. (Like Huambo which is a dust and rumble city or Kuito and Malanje)

Apart from that, when we look at the HDI Index in Africa, we have to look how it improved and not where it stands because the countries that rank higher than Angola will also continue to rise and wonīt fell back. So I doubt if Angola will suddenly leap-frog to position 50 overnight. PATIENCE!

Angola has lost more than a generation in development and all of its educated elite has been wipped out or left the country. The country simply has to start from scratch and set its first somewhere and it has already done it, all is far from good but it is a start! Unfortunately, slums will stay for a very long time! Moreover, the Angolaīs uphill struugle will even be much harder than for Germany after 1945.

I was shocked to read that Angolaīs economy shrunk by minus seven percent for an entire decade which relativated my initial joy about Angolaīs current economic boom!

But the new western-educated elite, people like you, Hammelkar or LadyL among tens of thousand or maybe hundreds of thousands are the new elite that can help to push frontiers in a positive waywith their own business and with new and fresh ideas. You can help to MARKET Angolaīs potential despite its huge social flaws and inequalities that still exist! People like you are the hope of new Angola which is still standing on shaky feet but DESSERVES to be supported!

Angolaīs rise will also have positive spin-offs for the African continent as a whole! So while we are aware of the bad things happening, we shouldnīt leave a stone unturned to help promote Angolaīs improvement, there are just three to four threads dedicated to the new Angola on SSC, letīs keep it alive with brimming optimimism, smiles, hearty joys and love by entirely being aware of the other ugly side and what still needs to be done/accomplished in the years and decades to come.
Math, may be i never show bad sides of Luanda but what certain i have did was always try to show and retrat the reality as it is. Other thing was that this country (my country) need more projection. Every day the world says bad things about Angola, but just China is helping reconstruction. Others countries with situations even bad than us have already received help. Dont forget that we where in war since 1960 till 2002. Destroy its easy but built its another history. If we didnt have petroleum or diamonds im certain that things would be diferent. Angola in four years of peace have grow more than other countries in 20 years of peace like Mocambique. Why the world keep helping them if they dond get better?! May be because they dont have petroleum. Slums, i see every day every where in the world. Please people dont compare the "musseques" of Angola with "favelas in Rio". They are diferent realities. May be Lagos or Abuja or Soweto are great, nice slums all cleans?! please! Matt remember that time when some one show pictures about Lagos slums even worse than the ones we have in Luanda, but you didnt so me pointing u a finger. This pictures today dont upset me cose i saw they every they. Its the reality. What i dont admit its when some body says that 98% of the city its like that. Dirty its some thing and povery houses other dont confuse both. See you all guys

Hammelkar, how are you? I do hope fine.

....that with the 98% was a joke, ironically speaking, I should have put it into "..."!

You know that I have made countless positive contributions for a very long time now, so how can I be interested in projecting a bad image of Angola???
I am non-Angolan, Portuguese is not my mother tongue nor a foreign language that I have learnt anywhere(I just deduct from French and Spanish) but just look at all the pics that i have collected, look ta all the projects, look at the music and showbizz, sports and fashion, historic pics and threads that I have created about Angola, look at the news threads about Angolaīs reconstruction that I am following zealously, I also installed threads about the your country in other sub-forums to show people the NEW ANGOLA, I have skimmed through tons of skyblogs and personal webpages to get the best Angola has to offer and then some guys came around and said that I would paint an unrealitic picture of the country and they indirectly said that I was showing "crap" because reality is very very far from all this, So I felt "compelled" and misunderstood, my work and time invested was in vain, the best way to refute this was by showing the other side of luanda. So I just said to myself, get people the other side of Luanda. if people hadnīt started with politics again , I would have over-reacted in such a way. this is a thread SOLELY dedicated to pictures, if people want to discuss politics they should open a thread on "Oasis", this is what I proposed. Go through the debates.

Hammelkar, you know that I like Angola very much and i inwardly long to see it prosper (alongside Nigeria and many other african countries) BUT ALL I AM SAYING IS THAT IT NEEDS TIME!!!! YOU CANNOT MAKE UP 32 YEARS OF DESTRUCTION IN 2-3 YEARS OF RECONSTRUCTION!!! How many times have I said it on this forum??? I am already like a parrot.....

Ok, having said this, letīs stick to showing only pictures. I hope the mod deletes the post as soon as somebody begins to bring back politics INTO THIS THREAD, we have the section "Oasis" for this!

Can WE be ourselves? WE all have our shares of good and bad. Slums and poverty stricken population are part of us. Most important thing is we are willing to make progress.... a progress that will be beneficial to everyone and not just the privileged few.

Guys lets move this discussion to the OASIS where i have created a new thread. I hope we can continue to post beautiful pictures of Luanda here.

Is Angola's oil boom being equitably shared and helping to alleviate poverty?

The problem has been settled so your comment is superfluous and out of its context!
