Well I hope they change their mind and go for a ground or underground metro. I think those aerial metro systems that I have seen in Bangkok and KL very ugly. Luanda has to many beuautiful old buildings to be ruined my something so obtrussive.

Hammelkar, thank you for all the information! We do really all appreciate your input a lot and without you the Angola threads would be nothing!

Have you seen the new towers posted, read the technical information on their website and in which streets they will go up. Tbite kindly helped to post the pics.

I will try to find the webpage again where new towns will be built in Lubango and Benguela.

Popa i can assure u that aerial its the best way for Luanda. Luanda soils are very instable and unpredicted. There is also the weather that is very hot almost all year. Sidney they have some monorails and dosent look ugly. In fact gives a certain charm. Do you think new York is ugly because of the aerial lines?? or singapore? or Bombay? or Shangai? or Paris?
Dont think so

Sorry, maybe my understanding of an aerial line is wrong. If you are talking about lines elevated about 10-15m then yes, I do think they make cities look ugly.

They look much better in modern cities rather than cities with large amounts of old architecture

Singapore, Paris and NYC are mostly underground btw.

This is the local new Angolan supermarket chain called "Nosso Super"
It was inaugurated in March 2007, the number of stores has reached ten by now in the country.
The company plans 70 stores (supermarkets and hypermarkets) by 2010 across the country. Concept: the prices are more affordable for the people and the networks will work closely with local producers, especially in the agricultural sector

Hammelkar, I found this ad, seems to be another new project, what is it,please?

Hi Matt, this is the future distribution center of Luanda. Its being built in Viana. Same facilities will be built in Malange on first phase. The objectiv of this centers is to receive the products of the farms and supply the supermarkets with this products. When i say supermarkets its not only the Nosso super of the government but also others from private owners. Angola hopes to have 4 to 5 of those till 2010 to serve all regions of the country (north, south, east, west and center regions)

Btw, have you noticed that there are no motorcycles or byclesor donkeys in the streets of Luanda, the amount of good cars is staggering for an African country which has the size of Angola...and the best is that Angola will start the leasing system and other price-incentive measures on car sales soon...which will only translate into more new flashy cars for the countryīs rising urban middle-class.
Thats quite sad actually. It'd be really nice to see cyclists grow in numbers in Luanda and Angola as a whole. I get the feeling that cyclists are looked down upon among people with automobiles. Hopefully Angolans become much more aware of the problems that affect the world and stop giving too much priorities to the automobile over cyclists. In the end, lovely photos. They're all great. Nice to see Angola is going somewhere.

Koolkid, Am I overreacting again? But if you look at photos from China a decade ago, what did you see, if you compare it to those of today? The disapperance of motorbikes! The trend is catching on in Vietnam, too. Having a car is a symbol of progress especially for people in developping countries. AND THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DRIVE A GOOD CAR! It is not sad, it is only a normal way of development, of a country climbing up the economic ladder, maybe in twenty or thirty years people will reflect the "good old times" and they start riding by bike to work (which is the case for Europe).
But go back in history: it was a status symbol in Germany of the 50īs and 60īs for people to possess their own car, so letīs be happy to see so many (new) cars in Luanda and more and more in the provinces. This is just a normal way of things!
