What do people think of this design for the new national stadium in Japan? Not sure what I think; its unique, thats for sure.

Sorry about big picture.

kind of like taking estadio omnilife and going one step further, i dont like it, ruins the whole idea of walking up to a stadium and being able to see it, whilst i do think stadiums should be integrated into their landscape somewhat this perhaps is a bit too much

Very cool idea. Always thought about something like that, with the stadium being entirely below ground level and people walking over its roof.

I'll be designing something like that shortly. I have a few extraordinary ideas I'd like to incorpororate into a setup like this

I think one of the biggest problem would be bpeople who dont pay for a ticket and just walk up to the edge of the roof and look over, free standing space with decent views! Also, it would be all to easy to spit down at the athletes or even worse.

I think the simple design of the Estadio Omnilife is rubbish and far too plain. A agree that a stadoium should stand out and be easilty recognisable, such as the arch at wembley is visable from miles away or the Olympic stadium in Montreal or any massive structure with striking architecture and a unique design.

You wouldnt even notice it was there, you would just be walking through a park one day when suddenly there is a great big hole in front with 80,000 seats under it.

The stadium was one of 10 finalists of the "Tadao Ando’s National Stadium Design Competition" which is linked with the Japanese bid for the 2020 Olympics. This is a quote from the report "Japan’s Sport Council on Tuesday unveiled the 11 potential designs for its new national stadium, the first-round cut of an international competition chaired by architect Tadao Ando". The winning design will reimagine the existing structure and host the 2019 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2020 Olympic Games if the capital city is selected.

The winner was chosen today but will not be announced until later in the month. The winner gets 20 million yen (About 250 thousand dollars).
These are the 11 entries. Opinions?:

Entry 1:
Design: Cox Architecture

I could only find one picture for Entry 2:
Design: Populous

Entry 3 (Retractable stands for Rugby):
Design: UNStudio, Yamashita Sekkei

Entry 4:
Design: Zaha Hadid Architects

Entry 5:
Design: Tabanlioglu Architects

Entry 6:
Design: Dorell Ghotmeh Tane Architects, A+Architecture

Entry 7:
Design: Azusa Sekkei Co.

Entry 8 (Entire lower tier is retractable, one of my favorite designs):
Design: Toyo Ito & Associates

Entry 9:
Design: SANAA, Nikken Sekkei

Entry 10:
Design: GMP Architekten

Entry 11:
Design: Mitsuru Man Senda and Environment Design Institute

hmm hard to pick a winner out of those, zaha's is wanky as usual, sanaa's is definitely different, the stadium looks realy cool on the outside but shite on the inside, gmp's is alright except for the fact they pretty much replicate the same design for every new stadium they are asked to do. needs more kenzo tange inspired design.

AJ

Your work is great.

I was wondering something for my local stadium project - ~1000 seats stand.

What is usual distance between two pillars (row carriers) and what are usual row dimensions - width, height, thickness?

I use 7 meters between pillars (to have 15 equal sections (105 meters) later divided in 5 sectors), rows are 1 m wide, 40 cm height and 10 cm thick (L profile rows - to decrease it's weight). Everything is made out of concrete.

Others can help me too.

I have seen sports halls with a distance between pillars of 8,8m and stadiums with 11,5m and 12m.

Rows for new stadiums usually use the 80cm standard for depth (1m-1,2m for vip and boxes)

The height goes from 20cm to 56cm (can go higher for vip and boxes if the depth is over 80cm). I think max angle for a new stand should be about 36ş (higher for vip and boxes, can't remember)

The thickness I think is around 15cm, not sure on this one.

I have made some changes. More stairways, seven rows from the bottom converted to retractable seating. Room for paleyer and penalty boxes made. Player and other access routes added and some seats put in place.

It's going to be a ice hockey arena. 200' x 85' NHL rink.

Thank you for answering.

11m seems huge.

80cm - for seats fixed to concrete or foldable ones?

I use 40 cm height, seems just fine for one deck stadiums.

Both. But this is not a rule, is just a guideline, since there are stadiums that reduce the depth to a minimum 76cm for the upper tiers.

Questions for the experts: Are stadiums actually built with constant riser heights of rows or constant C-Values and therefore increasing riser heights of rows?

Thanks for help
