![]() Port of Koper Signs Deal with Korean Logistics Company Luka Koper, the operator of Slovenia's only commercial port, has signed a deal with the Korean company Glovis for the use of the port as a logistical base for the new car factories which Kia and Hyundai are building in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Luka said Tuesday, 23 May. Luka Koper CEO Robert Casar and board member Aldo Babic last week concluded talks in Seoul with representatives of Glovis, the largest logistics company in South Korea. Glovis Europe Corporation plans to build a subsidiary in Koper. The deal also foresees an increase in the annual flow of vehicles and containers. "The deal has been struck despite fierce international competition and has been helped by the good relations between the transport minister and his foreign counterparts," the port said. On 23 May 1957, the company Luka Koper was established. Works on the construction of Slovenia's first commercial port started the same month, with its first terminal being completed in November. Defence Contractor to Build New Factory in Autumn Defence technology company Sistemska tehnika intends to start building in autumn its new production facility for the assembly of the Krpan 8x8 and Valuk 6x6 light armoured personnel carriers, the Viator&Vektor transport and logistics group has said. Slovenia's largest defence technology specialist intends to complete the construction of the 8,000 square metre facility in the first half of 2007, boosting development opportunities and opening over 100 new jobs in the region of Korosko (NE). The Ravne na Koroskem-based company is also awaiting the decision by the Ministry of Defence on the acquisition of 8x8 armoured vehicles. The ministry told STA that it received two bids, the second from bearings producer Rotis Trzin, both in line with the tender's specifications. The final decision is expected by the end of the year. Sistemska Tehnika currently employs 320 workers, with two-thirds working on its defence programme. It is currently involved in talks on producing nearly 900 armoured personnel carriers, added Viator&Vektor, the parent of Sistemska tehnika, in a press release. Gorenje CEO Reveals Ambitious Expansion Plans The chief executive of household appliance maker Gorenje has said that the company has ambitious expansion plans, whereby production will only be expanded abroad and remain level at home. "In Slovenia we want to retain the current output and the number of productive jobs, while additional volume growth will be achieved elsewhere," Franjo Bobinac said in an interview for the weekly Demokracija. According to him, 10% of the production is already taking place in the Czech Republic (after last year's acquisition there of Mora Moravia). In the coming years production will be expanded to four locations, including Russia and Ukraine. Gorenje will grow through a combination of acquisitions and greenfield investment with a view to raising sales to between 1.5 and 2 billion euros a year. "If we double our market share, we will capture around 7% or 8% of the European market." This would make Gorenje the fifth largest player in the industry in Europe, which accounts for 90% of the company's sales. Other priorities for the company include achieving economies of scale and effective cost management, as well as brand innovation. "We will try to instill our design with a greater sense of technological innovation," he said. In terms of international presence, Gorenje is already the biggest Slovenian multinational, but it plans to become at least twice as big, with a strong market position and based in Slovenia, he said. Telco Telekom Slovenije Acquires 75% of Kosovo's Ipko Net Telco Telekom Slovenije acquired 75% of Kosovo's Internet service provider (ISP) Ipko Net, ivnesting EUR 19.5m into the company, out of which EUR 10m will be used for expanding and modernising the network of Kosovo's largest ISP. This is Telekom's third investment abroad, having purchased in March FYROM's second-biggest Internet provider, On.net, and signed in April an agreement with German international phone services provider 01066. Ipko Net posted revenues of EUR 4.6m and a pre-tax profit of EUR 2.4m in 2005. |

Slovenian euro coins

![]() Haider (Kärnten prime minister) was complaining about this coin. It's a picture of "knežji kamen", a stone where coronation of Karantanian dukes happened. Karantania, also Carantania or Karantanija in Slovene is believed to be a direct ancestor of Slovenia and Slovenes. Carantania was the 1st state of Slovene ancestors as South Slavic people. As this stone is stationed in Koroška or German Kärnten, Haider likes to provoce sometimes. Of course nobody serious listenes to him. ![]() "Karantania sometimes Carantania, Carentania, Carinthia (in old Slovenian onomastics Korotan, or Karantanija) was a Slavic principality that developed in the 7th century and was centered on the territory of contemporary Carinthia. Lasting almost 300 years, it is considered one of the first Slavic state forms. The people of Karantania are considered as one of the precursors and ancestors of modern Slovenians." |

![]() Slovenian army just finished its testings of Krpan... I really hope they will choose this one instead of Finnish Patria. It is a very versatile and quick vehicle with lots of technology. It's easy to use and mantain, especially because it has about 40 % of same parts as smaller Valuk 6x6 which Slovenian army is already using.

![]() Finance: Mercator Remains Biggest, Krka Best Slovenian Company Ljubljana, 29 May Retailer Mercator remained the biggest Slovenian company in 2005, while pharma company Krka was, again, ranked as the best Slovenian company, according to the "101 Biggest and Best Slovenian Companies" survey in business daily Finance. Using weighted data on shifts in company results and size according to different factors (revenues, profit, number of employees), the paper concluded that Mercator retained its position as the biggest Slovenian company in 2005. Ranked by size, Mercator was followed by Krka, pharma company Lek, national telco Telekom Slovenije and car manufacturer Revoz, the survey published in Monday's edition also shows. Meanwhile, Krka was the best Slovenian company of 2005, due to its return on equity and growth in profit. The Novo-mesto based drug maker was followed by steel producer Metal Ravne, Revoz, gaming company Hit and another steel producer, Store Steel. |

This is not so important as it is interesting
![]() ![]() Gorenje Sells Swarovski-Sprinkled Fridge for US$ 110,000 Household appliance maker Gorenje sold one of its top-of-the-line Premium Touch refrigerators for a record US$ 110,000. The refrigerator, sprinkled with 7,000 Swarovski crystals, was bought by a Russian millionaire, with the proceeds going for charity. The fridge was sold to Russian millionaire Rustam Tariko at an auction held in Moscow's elite night club Dagilev. Gorenje donated the money to a charity that helps homeless Russian children, the company said on Monday, 29 May. The Moscow sale comes on top of two other Premium Touch fridges which have already been sold and proceeds donated to charity in Romania's Bucharest and in Slovenia. The fourth in the series of five unique black refrigerators was meanwhile sold at London's prestigious department store Harrods. The last one will soon be auctioned in the Serbian capitol Belgrade. Gorenje also sells the retail version of the fridge, which has 3,500 hand-mounted crystals. |

![]() Lonely Planet: ''Celica Hostel the best in the world'' Lonely Planet, the world's leading publisher of travel guides, has awarded the title of ‘Hippest Hostel in the World’ to Celica Youth Hostel, which is located in a former military prison. The Šouhostel organisation, which has run the Celica Hostel since it opened three years ago, has said that according to Lonely Planet, the hostel offers the most attractive accommodation for young travellers. Because of its extraordinary interior, which features converted cells, Celica has made it on the list of most unusual places to stay. According to Tomaž Štefe, director of Šouhostel, this is one of the reasons Celica has become a Ljubljana landmark, and why it boasts one of the highest occupancy rates. In 2005, the hostel had 15,726 guests, which accounted for a total of 27,986 overnight stays. Ninety-seven per cent of all overnight stays were by foreign guests, with UK citizens accounting for 22 per cent, followed by Americans (10 per cent), Germans (9 per cent) and Australians (8 per cent) of all overnight stays. According to Šouhostel, in 2005 the Celica Hostel saw turnover of SIT186.6 million (approx. €778,000), at a 93 per cent occupancy rate, which is twenty-two per cent more than the year before. Meanwhile, net profit in the last fiscal year rose by fifteen per cent over 2004 to SIT12.6 million (approx. €52,000). ![]() Here's the page of the hostel: http://www.souhostel.com/ |

One of the news in English:
Slovenian economy grows by 5.1 percent in first quarter Slovenia's gross domestic product ( GDP) grew by 5.1 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, one of the highest growth rates in the past six years, the Slovene Press Agency reported on Friday. "The economy is currently in good shape because it has taken advantage of favorable trends in the broader region," Karmen Hren, a senior official of Slovenia's National Statistical Office, told the press in Ljubljana on Friday. One of the main features of the first quarter was the 13.7 percent year-on-year increase in exports, with imports growing by 12.1 percent, said Hren, adding that 80 percent of the GDP growth is a result of soaring domestic expenditure despite the rapid trade growth. Housing construction continued to hop along at an annual rate of 13 percent, but the peak has been reached so the curve would start to flatten out gradually, said Hren. Added value increased the most in manufacturing, but high growth was also recorded in transport, hotels and restaurants and in trade. In basic industries added value increased by 6.6 percent, in market services by 4.9 percent and in the general government sector by 2.6 percent. |
