Sheffield Post Office Redevelopment Fitzalan Square
Really glad the council recently approved the re-development of the old Post Office at Fitzalan Square, always admired this imposing building, even though its very dirty at the minute its still very beautiful!
The main hall of the post office will become a restaurant, the basement below forming a second place to eat. Three floors above those developments will be converted into 60 residential apartments and 7 self contained freehold office units, while the 9 storey wing will house a 120 bedroom hotel, which is to be built from scratch on the site of the current extension which is to be demolished. Work on-site is expected to start during the summer months. ![]() ![]()

Although i'm really pleased that this buidling is being refurbished, i must say i'm a little disappointed with the use- i liked the idea of independent shops inside, like the Leeds corn exchange. I think its a bit obvious to have a restauraunt and apartments. However the hotel should be a benefit, especially being so close to the station. Hopefully this project will bring a bit of life to the area. Any ideas as to the rating or operator of the hotel? Now we just need to get rid of the bastard roxy!

It's probably a good job I'm not in charge of anything at all because I've always found this building to be very depressing and gloomy. The corner rotunda thing looks plain wrong - odd proportions I think. And the whole building looks somehow stunted. It's just very boring, sullen Victoriana in my book.
However, I'll be fascinated to see how it's developed, as it could help to begin the transformation of what has long been a somewhat dismal quarter of town.

Hey man, Victoriana is in these days, donchaknow? I'm of the impression that most things in sandstone seem to stand the test of time much better than other materials. Concrete, that is.

It's not Victoriana itself that I object to - or indeed sandstone. It's this rubbish example of it that has served to lower my spirits on countless occasions as I trudged up Pond Street to Fitzalan Square.
I'm sure the redevelopment will be good though. Hope so. EDIT: I should add that my spirits were lowered far more by the likes of Flat Street multi-storey car park, so yes, you're probably right!

Damon i know what you mean actually about the building stirring feelings of gloominess, its a reminder of late night treks to the bus station after work constantly watching over my shoulder. Even in the day that area is grim i think because of the higher buildings on the opposite side of the road. I think it probably is more to do with the area, i'm sure once its spruced up with a big modern extension it wont look so grim.

So am I correct in concluding that as part of the PostOffice redevelopment this office extension on Pond St will be knocked down and replaced by an
11-storey hotel?

Former Sheffield Post Office New Renders
Finally the renders for the former post office development have been uploaded to the planning website. I know, should stop complaining about red brick but I wish they could bring some colour into the rather dark and grim Flat St area by using a stone or cladding on the hotel that would be a bit brighter instead of the proposed ... red brick. I like the use of wood though, that means, I think that is what is proposed for the small tower on the corner.

Will certainly lift that area, quite a sympathetic design as well. All the planning documents are available here...

Does anyone know a rough date when work will start on this project, and also a timescale of the thing?

That last picture contains a fantastic image of a pigeon captured in mid flap against the end of the block.
David Attenborough might be giving you a call if you keep that one up.
