It really doesn't matter which city is bigger than the other, it varies all the time how you look at it. Regarding the Wikipedia link, some of the data on there is extremely incorrect, especially the annual growth rate column.

I agree. In terms of size London and Paris are about the same, and they're both a bit smaller than Moscow and Istanbul.

In terms of density, or urban form, it gets more interesting.

Paris is an extremely dense urban core (I reckon the 11eme and Belleville are above 40,000 people/sq km) surrounded by a more spatious urban area, which is still a lot denser than London's.

On the other hand, whereas London transitions into the countryside quite gently, by sprawling into a semi-rural city pretty soon, Paris is much more compact and urban until much further away. Also, the whole concept of having new towns and satellite cities littering the fields is not present in France.

false. have you ever been to paris? lol
there are 5 new towns around paris created in the 60's
- cergy pontoise
- saint quantin en yvelines
- evry
- marnes la vallée
- melun senart.

they have now been totaly absorbed into the build up area by the growing urbanisation

I meant there are no issues with building out of the blue, beyond agreen belt, huge communities that did not exist historically.

There are other issues though. It's interesting to look at the history of cities, and their evolution. Different models, not saying that one's better than another.

the build up area in paris increased a lot in the last 25 years and they are still building a lot in what used to be corn fields a few years ago

all this is new in the east of paris.

City of Paris 40.7 sq miles, London 607 sq miles. Paris population 2.2 million, London's population 8.6 million. This is the facts when you exclude the metro and urban areas, which is used when determining a cities size and population proper.

I feel like the average user age on this thread has lowered to fourteen years old. On all sides of this "debate" which feel more like youtube comments.

GB1, I already made a post about that. The city limits of Paris determine the centre area, like London centre area.

(...)

Even if the overal design is not that bad, i'm not that exited about these news developments; i recon upper middle class families have some specific needs that those suburbs suits (acceptable costs by being far away from the city center while providing a pleasing environment, but a long commuting). But ! this is eating so much natural space when we should fill the gaps between the " fingers of the urban glove" that follow ways of communication instead of going further away.

I don't like the naming fashion. Fot the cité musicale, it is quite nice but too much concrete to me.
