Replace a complex structure dating back to the 70s.

Already nicknamed the "toilet basin".
Honestly I really prefer the older building of the 70's.

This building is not going to be built anyway. The administrative court of appeal of Paris is about to declare the whole project void because administrative rules were not respected. I'm chuckling in advance at the mayor's discomfiture.

What a joke. I can tell you with 100% certainty that Russians are more European in every way than any Texan cowboy.

The Champs-Élysées is such an old street, how is it that modern buildings can be there? Surely they wouldn't destroy what was there before? The building to the right of the Citroën definitely doesn't justify the destruction of anything historical.

I agree. The new building looks positively plain and generic, and doesn't fit well with its context. I much prefer some of the other rejected proposals. Most Paris residents supposedly hate the 70's structure, however, and I suppose they know it better than I do. I'm just not sure if they'll be happy with the new one, though. As the old saying goes, different doesn't mean better.

According to the hints we have, it's likely to be cancelled, yes. Then it's all back to square one. Probably it'll be an issue in the municipal elections next year. I know people in architecture circles who rejoice at the likely cancelation of the project. Apparently the project of Rem Koolhaas was the most favored by architects.

I don't see why Koolhaas's project would be more old-fashioned in a few years time than the Pompidou Centre which is still not old-fashioned more than 30 years after being built.

Not at all, the Champs-Elysées is quite unique and very different from most haussmanian boulevards in Paris.
