Paris set to build three garden bridges over the River Seine

Quote:
Paris has opened bids for three privately funded garden bridges to be built over the Seine.

The plans come as part of a new scheme to build footbridges that will be home to shops, offices, gardens, theatres and other activities.

An official told The Times the project is unique, saying there is "nothing like it anywhere in the world as far as we know".
The project is due to be announced by Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo this weekend, according to Le Parisien.

Plans for the Garden Bridge in London, which was to cross the Thames between Waterloo and Blackfriars, were scrapped earlier this year amid claims of a lack of support from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

The three bridges will be built by the André Citroën park in west Paris, next to the Tino-Rossi garden in the centre of the city and near to the Bercy-Charenton district in the east.

There will be 40 bridges throughout the historic city after the plans go through.

The official said: "The idea is that they will not only be bridges for pedestrians and cyclists but also places of life with cafés, restaurants, shows and gardens."

Ms Hidalgo wants private developers to fund the bridges before renting or selling the space on them to recoup the investment, the newspaper reported.

The project is part of an initiative to reinvent cities launched by C40, a network of 90 cities around that world that focuses on tackling climate change.

Fifteen cities, including Paris, invited bids to regenerate urban sites, such as a former airport, historical mansions, underused car parks and an abandoned incinerator.

The initiative was inspired by a 2015 scheme to reinvent Paris, launched by C40 Chair Ms Hidalgo.

In a statement before the launch of the scheme she said: “Reinventing Cities will set new standards of sustainability in cities."

Developers will have a year to submit their bids, according to The Times.

Paris to Return Its Great Public Squares to the People

Quote:
Seven iconic Parisian squares have been selected to get a major makeover, as part of the mayor's ongoing bid to hand the city back to cyclists and pedestrians.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is stepping up her campaign to hand Paris back to pedestrians and cyclists.

The aim of her new project , scheduled to be completed by 2020, is to give more space to pedestrians and cyclists on the seven famous squares or places which are currently monopolized by cars. The squares set to be remodelled are: Place de la Bastille, Place de la Nation, Place du Pantheon, Place d'Italie, Place de la Madeleine, Place Gambetta and la Place des Fetes.

Mayor Hidalgo first announced the project last year, and on Sunday she revealed the blueprints for how the squares will look post-makeover (see below).

"Pedestrians and cyclists will gain 50 percent more space on average," Christophe Najdovski, deputy head of highways, explained to theJournal du Dimanche newspaper. He added that the goal was to make the squares "places of life, agreeable and re-balanced", rather than simply "places of movement".

As much as €30 million has been set aside to be shared out among the seven squares - despite the fact that a similar project to transform the Place de la Republique alone cost €24 million.

I am becoming tires of those waves everywhere in the buildings like Immeuble Berkeley, all this parametric stuff done to the exhaustion. Within years, it will be old fashioned.
