Fordham Spire Gets Approval From Chicago City Council
Wednesday March 29, 5:05 pm ET

CHICAGO, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago City Council this afternoon gave its approval to plans for the Fordham Spire, the luxury residential and hotel tower designed by famed architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. The unanimous vote to move forward with the building represents the final approval hurdle for The Fordham Company, which is developing the tower.
"We couldn't be more excited that the City Council has embraced the addition of the Spire to Chicago's renowned skyline," said Christopher T. Carley, chairman and CEO of The Fordham Company.

Upon completion, anticipated in 2010, the tower will house 300 of Chicago's finest residences and a five-star hotel.

The 124-story Fordham Spire, measuring 2,000 feet to the top of its spire and 1,600 feet to its roof, will be the tallest structure in the United States. It will be located just west of Lake Shore Drive where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan.

Earlier this month, the Chicago Plan Commission unanimously approved the project, which included a few changes to the original building plans:

-- The tower's spire now rotates a full 360 degrees, providing a tighter
twist to the design.
-- Ringed by a circular plaza, the tower now rises straight out of the
ground rather than from a tiered four-story podium.

Last week, Fordham Co. received unanimous approval from the Chicago Committee on Zoning.

About The Fordham Company

The Fordham Company, founded in 1988 by Christopher T. Carley, is one of the Midwest's premier developers of high-end residences. The company is currently identified with three prestige developments in Chicago's North Michigan Avenue and Gold Coast areas: the distinguished, eight-story 65 East Goethe; the award-winning Fordham Tower at 25 East Superior; and The Pinnacle at 21 East Huron, across from the St. James cathedral. Recently, Fordham Co. acquired the famed Ambassador East Hotel, home to The Pump Room. For more information about the company, visit http://www.fordhamco.com . The Fordham Spire sales office is located at 15 E. Huron and can be reached at 312-587-0660.

No need for another topic. Approval was just a matter of time. Now it is financing and sales.

Its difficult to get a building taller than 2,000 feet passed in the U.S. Faa has to aprove.

Im annoyed about the building in Dubai. Its gonna be taller. Also, how ironic that Skidmore Owings & Merrill has designed it....a Chcago based company....*******s.

Our major will probably raise our taxes again for funding....like he did with Soldier Field.

No, that was incorrect. Soldier Field was paid for by an increase in existing hotel tax (basically for tourists). This project WILL NOT be funded by taxes at all. Any politician asking for increased taxes will most likely not be re-elected anyway.

The hotel (possibly the Hôtel de Crillon) should be announced in a month or two, and supposedly financing is in place with "European investors" but not yet announced. He needs to sell about 50% of the units for construction to begin and so far has 30 reserved and will take more April.
