Well, aside from NASCAR, Charlotte doesn't really have things that would lend themselves to a strong brand (e.g., musical legacy, coastal/mountain location, college town, lots of history, etc.), so it's just focusing on being a very livable place and attracting the amenities that come along with a rapidly-growing metro. Plus, it gets a good bit of convention business. I think that's the way the city should go about things.

i think charlotte got caught up in tremendous growth, and developers pressed, as they seem to do most everywhere they appear, to develop, often, at the expense of the history of a particular place. in my view, probably a good deal of old charlotte was just dozed away in the excitement of building skyscrapers, structures, and roads. one big plus for charlotte and for north carolina is its natural setting and the beauty of the area, and, indeed, the entire state. the state has mountains, coastline, inland typography and so much more. charlotte has close proximity to chapel hill, wake forest, r-d, and so much more. i think that charlotte should encourage its presence through tourism and focus on its past history in the development of the nation and now the rather remarkable history of its development as a major player in various economic circles: not only just on the east coast, but in america. it should focus on the development of musems for carolina history, beautiful public gardens, interesting public buildings and churches, and, perhaps, some recreational areas, which can be identified as "go to" places. even though i love tn, and it has so much natural sites w/in its borders, we still will never have a coast, and that won't change.

Which is pretty much what Atlanta did and it worked for ATL. Not much there to start with -- heck, B'ham was giving the place a run for it's money before ATL decided to beef up its airport and attract Delta. There's much to learn from many places.

Actually Atlanta was a boomtown back in the 1850s and was a significant manufacturing city during the Civil War. Atlanta has quite a bit of historical significance in comparison to Charlotte, and was a much larger city than Charlotte much earlier on - as seen in the large number of preserved downtown highrises and other structures. Charlotte is a very new city compared to Atlanta...that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it just is. There are some beautiful historic buildings in uptown Charlotte, but only a smidgen of what can be found in downtown/Midtown Atlanta. So it's not really like what Atlanta did at all...it's completely different.

I think what UrbanMyth is getting at is that Atlanta's brand isn't really historical in nature, except for perhaps Civil Rights, but more contemporary. Of course Atlanta does have history and was a decently-sized city in the early 1900's, so it's a bit inaccurate to say there wasn't much there to begin with, but wasn't quite as historically prominent as other cities that have their brands centered around their history. Atlanta's brand is based on its present and projected future, not really its past.

Some nice new renderings were released today of the roof top of the new Hyatt Hotel and Skye Condo devlopement, f.k.a. The Park.

Info: http://www.centercityliving.com/2011/04/skye-condos/

The approximately 8,000 square foot rooftop restaurant includes indoor/outdoor seating with private dining, outdoor lounge and “sky” bar with walls that open up to the roof area, which includes the pool and sun deck in approximately 7,800 square feet of open space walkways, green roof and seating areas.

So Jealous! Private Dining, does that mean the whole thing is off limits to the public though?

No, I'm sure what they mean is how you can sometimes rent out private rooms at resturants. Sounds like there will be parts of the resturant people and companies could rent out for private dinning parties.

Word on the street is that there are going to be a handful of large scale apartment projects announced in south end over the next few months. Estimations are 1,500-2,000 units total! All of this will be Transit Oriented Development.

Another look at the renamed Skye Condos

Quote:
The Skye Condos will be a 22-story high rise development with a rooftop restaurant. Some of the amenities the Skye condos will have include, valet service, pool, and a gym. You can also expect some hotel types of amenities that include shuttle and cleaning service. Those have yet to be confirmed, but I would bet those will be included.

Skye Condos will have 67 condos and 172 Hyatt Place Hotel rooms. The condos will range from 800 to 3,800 square feet. Parking will be on floors 2-6 and Hyatt brand hotel on floors 7 – 9 and 11-13, the 10th floor will feature a fabulous lobby and separate amenity areas for the hotel and guests and condos owners.

The rooftop will feature an 8,000 sq ft restaurant with an indoor and outdoor dining. The ground floor will also include 2,600 square feet of retail. Residents will also enjoy living in a great location as they will be within walking distance to Bobcats Arena and the EpiCentre.

And the view from the rooftop:

Apple iCloud Data Center in Maiden NC revealed!

Quote:
Aerial footage of Apple’s massive data center in rural North Carolina clearly show how large the $1 billion complex is.

Shot recently by a local realtor, the footage shows a massive facility the size of a shopping mall.

Experts note that Apple’s data center will be among the largest in the world, rivaling centers run by internet giants like Microsoft and Google. The unusual size of the data center suggests that Apple is investing heavily in cloud computing. At 500-000 square feet, the facility is five-times the size of Apple’s West Coast center in Newark, Calif.

Apple has said little about the complex, except that it’ll be its east coast data hub.

And there's more planned:

They mentioned it on Urban Planet as well, I think this might just happen! I hope this will be a residential/hotel component with this!

How do you know he didn't hear it from UP?

I hope this new project will be 50 stories or more. I think it would be a missed opportunity to not build out this to be a massive hotel/apartment building purely from its prime location (Light Rail, epicenter, TWC Arena, Trade/Tryon, Bank of America, Convention Center, Transportation center)
