Work has started again on Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners’ £340 million Cheesegrater tower in the City after a string of delays.

Contractors are today back on site and pressing ahead with piling works which will underpin the tapering 47-storey Leadenhall building.

The news follows December’s deal struck between developer British Land and one of North America’s largest commercial real estate investors, Oxford Properties, to develop the 224m-tall building.

Nigel Webb, head of developments at British Land, said they had already had interest from potential occupiers and hoped completion in 2014 would coincide with strong demand and a shortage of suitable office space.

The Leadenhall building was originally due to complete in 2011 before the recession led to a drop in demand for office space and the plans were put on ice, contributing to RSHP’s announcement of 35 redundancies in March 2009.

The site, on Leadenhall Street, was the subject of a “meantime” competition won by Mitchell Taylor Workshop which planned to put a city farm there. But British Land later scrapped the plan amid fears it would send out the wrong signal about the future of its skyscraper.

Good pics, I don't know which one is more exciting, this one or the Pinnacle.

WOW, so it means there's gonna be a small revolution in the City. Great news, and it's funny that a few photos make me so happy end excited. When I was in London in the summer I was just thinking what's going on with this area, I didn't see any progress but now...

That building's lobby will either be the best lobby of the decade or an epic fail that will ruin the whole building. Guess we'll have to wait.

The word fail and this building do not go together at all, it'll be a monumentous success all round. What a beauty!

I know how you feel. I've walked past this site many times with nothing going on and thinking of the potential - still, so many projects on the go again it's all looking good!

When's this due to be finished now that it's presumably following a schedule?

Depends on what do you mean by saying 'noticeable'. There will be for sure some part of the building but it won't be finished yet. They have 2 years, so it's quite enough to build something

Any chance of this passing out the Pinnacle and topping out before it?
