Does Mecca have the population to support this kind of building or the economic importance. Seems more suited for Jeddah. But beautiful nonetheless.

It's a hotel for the pilgrimagers of Mecca, and that are millions of people.

I'm not very familiar with the hajj(SP?),isn't it a once per year pilgrammage?
If so,what will the hoteliers do the rest of the year? Are there other local attractions that would draw visitors?

Yes, that's once a year. It attracts close to 2 million pilgrims. But in its modern period, Mecca has seen a great expansion in size and infrastructure. With a population of 1,700,000 citizens, it's quite big.

The recent expansion of the city provided many modern landmarks such as these huge towers of Abraj Al-Bait.

The city has grown substantially in the 20th and 21st centuries, as the convenience and affordability of jet travel has increased the number of pilgrims participating in the Hajj. Thousands of Saudis are employed year-round to oversee the Hajj and staff the hotels and shops that cater to pilgrims; these workers in turn have increased the demand for housing and services.

Looks like a cheap Las Vegas resort. Especially the buildings with all the aircons on the outside.

Actually the last number of pilgerimes last hajj was almost 5 millions total from KSA and other countries.

In 27th of Ramadan, the total was 2 millions.

This means that there are two seasons for makkah, one in Ramadan and the another in Hajj (2 months / yr).

I know owner of a shop front of the holy mosque, he told me and swore that their pure income per day during hajj is 30,000$/day (for 15 days) and in ramadan almost 15,000$/day (for 10 days).

He told me that most of the other months (5 months per yr since the pigrime/umrah is forbidden except from inside saudi arabia), our income is very low and hardly covers the costs. The other 5 months, the income is ok since the umrah will be opened/allowed for all countries.

This means that income is millions of $$$$$$$$$$ even if they work only in high seasons.

One more thing i would like to inform all that many are renting shops and keeping them closed all the year except the two months (the season) and they are getting millions

Business in Makkah is wonderful. and Makkah needs at least 50 projects like Abraj Al-Bait and they might not be enough for pilgrimes.

Also I read an article that Hilton Makkah got international sales award. Makkah is most expensive place on earth and best business on earth and here is the source:

But to live, you have to eat, sleep and wash yourself.
