Holy crud...
And we thought they were crazy with the Abraj Al-Bait,
now they will be rebuilding almost the whole city ???

Lets hope the world wide economic slowdown
does not effect this project.

Say what you want, but this is building on an incredible scale.
The Arab and Chinese worlds are surpassing the "west" for size
and number of world class construction.

The downside of masterplanning - too much money and power, no respect for history and no vision. Why must all the buildings be identikit clones of each other? Is this suppose to reflect the islamic idea of suppressing individualism before the religion as a whole?

Also, the Saudis are going to look pretty stupid in a century or two when Islam has died out (like all religions). It just kind of scares me that even in the 21st century, we (mankind) are *still* building vast edifices in the name of non-existant sky faeries. I know the muslims will of course disagree with me, but still............. At least the old mosques and cathedrals were beautiful. At least the old pyramids were amazing. Honestly, I think amazing architecture has been probably the only major benefit of religion in history, and now the Saudis are determined to destroy even that tradition...

Perhaps the sheer pomposity of this scheme - of an entire city's worth of development dedicated to enabling the practise of a pagan ritual - is what will finally teach the world the ridiculousness of religion.

Oh well, this is an architecture forum, so I should just bemoan the tragic failure of vision in these plans. That and the arrogant overriding of the very landscape in which it is set... Oh well. I shall continue to watch with morbid fascination

The proposal is absolutely unbelievable. It makes me think like those days you had unlimited money and other cheatcode and could just smack an whole area full with high buildings.

I agree with you totally. Back when I was a kid and still a muslim i use to go to Mecca every two weeks. Even though I use to find the whole ritual and effort really annoying, I still remember that even as a little kid I found the local architecture and the history and feel of the place awe inspiring. There was a strange charm walking up the steep hills along narrow streets with such a clash of old and new. Now its just gonna be all new, its gonna be just like any other city, and it will just be, crap.

I agree with you and Doomlord_uk. Why all 70 towers have the same shape, size, color etc. Much more the towers just like box. I hope this is just a model and the real render will be different. Let us wait the real render of these towers.

But then, this is not a religion forum, so stop posting about religion, please!

Peace be with you!

I actually like this proposal. While the design of the buildings looks repetitive and uninteresting it also has the effect of making all the buildings look like pieces of one incredibly large and awe inspiring structure. I also like the way the buildings decrease in size as they get closer to the Mosque. It's as if the buildings are praying, too. I think this proposal is much more in keeping with the sacredness of the site than the garish over bearing hotel next to the Mosque.

Maybe you meant pilgrims instead of crusader.

Pilgrims go on a pilgrimage, which is a visit to a place of religious significance.

Crusaders go on crusades, which are religiously driven military campaigns.

Taliban - crusaders. Muslims visiting the Kaaba - pilgrims.

i mean look at it all the towers are the same its going to look so dull and lifeless and whats going to happen to the people that already live in the area?? ... this project proposes a mass-destruction of an already existing city center to rebuild a duller one .. utterly pointless :S:S

How do they check if you are a moslim?
