Not really true. Most of the time the name is similar, but doesn't read exactly the same. See, for instance, London, that is called Londres in portuguese and Londra in italian. What about 日本, or Nippon, that we call Japan in english or something similar to that in most occidental languages? Not to mention …ire, the native name for Ireland...

If the proportions of the models are right, I counted 30-35 supertalls (between 300m and 350m)

The arabic name is Makkah, the anglicised name is Mecca. It's perfectly normal and not disrespectful to muslims.

I must be seeing things? Are the saudis trying to construct something that can "be seen from space?" This is a disaster in many ways!

Did someone just learn how to use a compass? Is this a student's project? I mean the bird's eye view is spectacular, but imaginge living in one of these blocks and walking out to the worn out over used landscaped areas surrounded by these things. The movie "Blade Runner" was in LA not Mekkah...

We are presently razing developments very similar to this in the US, they were a very popular during the design stages (the "Corbusian ideal") but soon it was realized that high numbers of people can't live like this.

Comparing how americans and saudis live does not really work, but who wants to be on the 40th floor of Building 59 facing away from the ka'ba???

i like how the closer to the center towers are a bit lower so the penthouse owners from the back can also see everything. sensibly made. and the big thingie... well, the guys other there know how to make thing look spectacular. kind of Equilibrium-ish style imo

for the prices in such place, and people who will be buying these - i'd say it rather be one floor - one flat situation. and even if not, than still i suppose that living THAT close to the center of their religion will be something that many will pay for without any hesitation.

A huge project is under way near the Kaaba, in the Grand Mosque, altering the skyline at Islamís holiest site. The Abraj al Bait Mall will bring an amusement park ride, fast food and a lingerie shop to the neighborhood.
The way Muhammad intended...

is this for real?

off topic

the model is just an overview of the mega project of mecca, tower designs will be different after each land owned by developer here an example of the west gate project,it's the main access from west side to central area (and it's just an overview as well that will be improved by smaller developers for each tower )

To quote the book 'Putting On The Ritz':

"It looks like Albert Speer goes to Las Vegas".

I think this is poor taste raised to an almost inhuman level of grandiloquence. No doubt it will wow and astonish a great number of people - but I worry that it will be the project's only obvious crowning attribute - and it looks like any others may get lost in the outsize jumble. The appeals to historical decoration are spurious, the referential scale is not conducive to human comfort, and the result - well, we'll have to see.

In short, it doesn't look like the cosiest place to live. Nor the most reverential.

By the way - before people get their backs up, I am not making a political comparison here, nor imputing such. I am speaking of an architectural problem, with problematic architectural precedents. There has to be a better way of providing proper reverence and respect for a place along with the desire to express honour, power and magnificence than what we are seeing here.

Warszawa - Warsow
Krakůw - Cracov
Wrocław - Wratislavia - Vratislavia - Breslau - Brassel - Vratislav - Vroclav - Boroszlů
Gdańsk - Gdansk - Danzig

just a couple examples of you being absolutly wrong on that statement

@Saddi guy: is there some more detail on that gate? or is it just someone's imagination to this moment?
