And just as an aside....

Frankly, I think a lot of the towers that are being thrown together in the Khaleej countries are rather cheap-looking and boring. I think to build one awesome super-tall here and there would make sense, but it's like every city is trying to outdo New York or Hong Kong and I think they're going to come up short. Besides, my own opinion is that a city is only as good as its people, as its culture, as its ambiance....building a few 500m towers in the middle of the desert, neither enriches the culture or the ambiance nor the quality of life in a city. Actually, I think that in places like Dubai, the proliferation of skyscrapers hurts the city since: a) the city doesn't appear to have any street life as it is (or very little to speak of) and b) it compartamentalizes the city (which is still an embryonic/developmental stage), drawing people away from public spaces (e.g., the street) and isolating them into these tall, separated mini-communities.

So far I think it compliments the mosque very well. The attention to detail seems to match the complexity of the mosque. The only negative thing I have about this is the clock. Looks horrible in the renderings but it make come out looking good.

I've just gotta say that I absolutely LOVE the design of this structure. IMHO, It's bold, it's big, it's audacious, it makes a huge statement, the design elements relate to each other, the subtleties of design are evocative of the Middle East, and in its grandeur it is worthy of it's affiliation with one of the greatest religions of our world and its location in, for what so very many, is one of the holiest locations in the world.

I'm very curious about the significance of the tents on the roof. Could someone please elaborate? I think they're absolutely beautiful. I'd love to find out how they structurally connected to the walls of windows.

A rather hideous tower. I would think that the mosque, being the mos important site for Muslims, should be the main attraction, not some over-the-top tower (which also takes away not only from the mosque, but from the historical character of the area). While I understand that Mecca needs to accomidate millions of pilgrims every year, I am sure they could have come up with a better solution.

I think that the Arab countries have gone insane with their super towers. Each one is becoming a more over the top white elephant.

I agree, this thing is far to big and far to ugly to have been located right next to mosque. It looks more like a Vegas Casino.

I think this is why I like the project -- it is both handsome on its own, yet does not actually detract from the beauty and import of the mosque itself.

The Kabaa is always going to be the main attraction. Size doesn't matter unless you ask a woman.
