my guess is probably because they will certainly take up spaces, and it really unreasonbale to allowed tourism at the expenses of the muslim which are here for religious duty. theres even a quota for muslim per hajj season, and here in malaysia, it took a lot of time to wait for your turn to performs the hajj.

I'm not so sure the building is out of proportion as, if you are going to build a tall building in such a location, then it needs to be very large to balance the size of the vast public realm.

The thing I can't get over is just how odd this building is. It in no way resembles any other building being constructed anywhere else in the world.
The main thing though is that the building just does not seem to be in any way Islamic seeming closer to the early New York skyscrapers such as the Municipal Building or the towers built in Moscow during the Stalin era whilst the clock, which must be absolutely huge, is reminiscent of British public buildings of the Victorian era.

What is clear is that the building has redefined the space. The whole architecture of the mosque buildings is designed as a frame for the Kaabah which is the obvious focus of Mecca. The addition of a massive skyscraper is creating a second focus and the clock is a sure sign that this building is designed to be a centre of attention.

There is some symbolism here but I have no idea what it is.

I'm not following this project very closely, but I am wrong in saying it's moving slowly? From what I remember, it doesn't look like it has progressed much in recent months.

You are wrong.

This is a picture from mid-April:

Compare it to the most recent pictures from mid-June.

i'm actually kinda not aware of its progress, thought the same - slowly built, but in fact - pretty fast
maybe because of its huge scale..

I think by now this is the biggest complex in the world isnt it? I only count those that got buildings integrated to each other.

A lame answer. Same could be said about every other city of high religious significance, yet it only applies to Mecca. I'm waiting for a better one, religion related, not some propaganda bullshit.
