Amazing, the scale of this project! And what more fitting a locale than Mecca? It'll be an incredible experience for those on Haj!

I'm going to attempt to give an objective criticism of this building and hopefully reveal some design authority to back my opinion. I am a professional designer, classically trained artist, and film maker. We'll see if that helps.

In simplest terms, notwithstanding the grand scale of the building or it's location to the mosque, I think the biggest failure of this building is the way it protrudes from the landscape in such an imposing, disconnected corporate manner. The Building looks like it's on steroids and it just walked (or stomped) its way over to the mosque's front doors.

Other Super-large architectural projects have successfully integrated into their landscapes and more so preserved the cultural iconography or symbology in the design, without resorting to such balls-out gimmicks. ...(if anyone asks, I can cite a ref or two).

Surely there was another proposal that was equally as large and functional, but that was designed to accentuate the landscape and would blend contemporary architectural design with regional design principles and islamic iconology without looking like an islam-themed vegas casino.

Basically, I have no problem with it's size or location. But those things call for some genuine, progressive problem solving to get right. Perhaps a series of modern minimalist smoked-glass structures in various edgy forms could have worked, so as to make a presence but maintain that the mosque is center of attention. It's just a rough idea, but what we're looking at here seems to be built on the macho, more is more philosophy.

Oh well, it's too late now.

I think it is very soon to judge the look or style of the building since it's only a simple part of a much bigger project. Many other projects are under construction around the building and mosque. The real thing will be revealed after the whole painting is completed.

wow, i think i kno why i dont like the design too much, i dont like masonry based looks ... i like glass lol SHINEY

another reason i might have bad feelings towards this building is the fact that the spire is just too tall for a building of this height, the highest habitable floor isnt that high... other wise, i like the shape and symbolism of the building... and im christian lol

Neither Arabs nor Muslims. Their closest decedents are the Coptic Christians in Egypt.
Anyway, these projects are just... bombastic. Too fat and boxy. I hope that if they are to be built- they won't be built near Mecca's historical center, it's called "historical" for a reason and it's stupid to destroy it.

oh my god. if this all got built i would cry. this is the ugliest project i have ever seen. it is such uninspired shit. it looks like the architect thought that by putting domes and islamic touches on the already crappy buildings, he thought he was justifying his hideous work.

Yes, that will be just stupid. It's always possible to build new buildings somewhere else, however- it's impossible to restore heritage buildings back to their original form. As you said, it was done many times in the 60s and 70s- and now it's usually regretted because the "new" buildings are now considered to be ugly concrete monsters. These new buildings which will be built in Mecca might be considered impressive and beautiful now but in 30, 40 or 50 years they might be just ugly and unimpressive buildings unlike heritage buildings which are always beautiful and impressive and most importantly- have an historical value.
