You Sir, have no idea what I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the small building structure, not architectural gems or whatever you may read between my lines. Those projects in the pipeline are humongous monstrosities. Worse than all the commie shite that was built where I come from or elsewhere in the east of Europe during 60 years. Now that's an achievement.

You should first check your vocabulary what the term historic core refers to. It's not to be equaled with old town. It just refers to that part of the city where it evolved from, the historic core of it. Nothing else.

I think everyone can get clearly what you've been refering to, so I'm not going to discuss that. But for now, since we moved the concentration to the term small buildings, I would easily answer: Makkah needs big biuldings...

Your the spam artist - instead of discussing progress on the actual project all you are offering is criticism of the project.

You have expressed yourself - good for you. For those of us that have actually been to makkah and know what is needed you won't see us complaining about these projects.

Yes some are ugly- but a lot of these projects are also fantastic - Abraj Al bait included.

People easily assume that Mecca is a place full of historic values just as Beijing or Rome. There's many historic lowrises in such places so we must be careful when we demolish the old buildings to build something big and modern. Mecca is different because it's a spiritual place rather than a historic one.
However, I think that this building still has problems, not historically, but architecturally. I don't have to tell because Benny Yarnell said it all.

In simplest terms, notwithstanding the grand scale of the building or it's location to the mosque, I think the biggest failure of this building is the way it protrudes from the landscape in such an imposing, disconnected corporate manner. The Building looks like it's on steroids and it just walked (or stomped) its way over to the mosque's front doors.

Other Super-large architectural projects have successfully integrated into their landscapes and more so preserved the cultural iconography or symbology in the design, without resorting to such balls-out gimmicks. ...(if anyone asks, I can cite a ref or two).

Surely there was another proposal that was equally as large and functional, but that was designed to accentuate the landscape and would blend contemporary architectural design with regional design principles and islamic iconology without looking like an islam-themed vegas casino.

Basically, I have no problem with it's size or location. But those things call for some genuine, progressive problem solving to get right. Perhaps a series of modern minimalist smoked-glass structures in various edgy forms could have worked, so as to make a presence but maintain that the mosque is center of attention. It's just a rough idea, but what we're looking at here seems to be built on the macho, more is more philosophy.

Oh well, it's too late now.
Yes, it's too late now.

Sigh...it looks like one of those extravagant Las Vegas casinos. Doesn't seem appropriate...

That's what discussions are all about - discussing (which mainly includes argumentations based on criticism). Perhaps you didn't know.

Anyway, I'm out. Another topic you aren't allowed to step out of the line of people clapping their hands to any shite offered to them without being charged by defending 'fanboys', or whatever you may call those. Strange people who neither are able to express their opinion nor to understand or accept those of others. Differentiation is alien to you guys, it seems.

It's just a run-on sentence, it isn't that hard.

Made three minor edits, should be more clear now.

What heritage is there?? You can even see the bad graffiti on the walls
Look at the heritage around that place too.
Makkah is a place to worship God not alka'bah or any other old building. Convenience of worship and pilgrims comes first. Makkah is not a museum.
Thats not his birthplace..know one knows his SPECIFIC EXACT location where he was born even though some people think its this building..its NOT

Impressive projects. The one with all the heli-pads looks like one giant medical center.

They're spending a lot on this eh? I wonder what percentage of the Saudi economy relies on religious tourism.
