may be for VIP, it will certainly reduce the hotel problems in the holy city.........

I still agree with u, it should be far from the Grand Mosque.........

This tower really represents what's bad about modern Middle Eastern architecture. It's all very nouveau riche - all money and no style.

Flaunting money about by building taller, cladding with gold, quasi Islamic designs - it's just tacky. The Middle East deserves better.

The Abraj Al-Bait is just hideous. If I were a Muslim, I'd be very angry that this gigantic monster was being built next to one of my religion's holiest sites. It's like building the 'New York, New York' Casino in Las Vegas beside the Vatican City.

Yes, it is tacky. On the other hand, most palaces build in europe are tacky and only their high age makes them classics. Moreover, we do not know if the locals appreciate this tackiness or not. Possibly they like it, so we should not judge.

European palaces tacky? Now that's an original statement to make.

I somehow happen to like the Abraj more now. But it definitely is the wrong place for such a big sucker.

of course they are tacky, a lot of palaces are made for rich spoiled kids of people without any sense for style or fashion. they just put anything together which had some value

So you'd call a Knobelsdorff or a Neumann palace tacky, because there's marble and gold everywhere?
Seltsam.

@miau
He wasn't disagreeing with you, he only - indirectly - told you that "NO U!!!1" isn't a valid argument and never will be one.

What the heck are you talking about? I do not have the impression that the the prior discussion was as you describe, maybe you are confusing it with something else. Anyway. this is offtopic :p

Things can be marvelously crafted, but still be tacky. For instance, you could carve the Mona Lisa into a piece of ivory using a diamond needle and then paint it with gold and sprinkle it with ruby and emerald. It is sure a hell of work and a lot of people would call it a masterpiece of craftmenship, but it is still tacky.
