Well, it's not an english nor roman numerals. It is only a special shape or symbol pointing at the correct time.

That's why you can see it as twos all the way.

Interesting...I never really noticed that. My mind placed Roman numerals in their place.

IMO Mecca has been "ruined" for the last half century and so by surrounding the holiest site in Islam with all these bland Third World highrises, and projects like Abraj al Bait are steps towards fixing the damage.
I've followed this project almost from the beginning & it's going to be completed later this year, but the above comment seems to skip the point that historical buildings have ALREADY been demolished (there was a post in another thread: http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=12149020 - can't see the pictures anymore but here's Ajyad Fort which used to be where Abraj al-Bait is now: http://archnet.org/forum/view.jsp?message_id=205855 - there was a plan to rebuild it but I haven't found anything on the rebuilding)

It would be nice if I could also go & appreciate historical sites rather than only coming to the mosques for worship. Perhaps they just exist in pictures like in the books by M. Ilyas A. Ghani (review: http://radianceweekly.com/Book-Revie...95&issue_id=94 - I like this better than the ones by Mubarakpuri, just to list some books by Muslims on the history) - I see how people are saying sites are being destroyed: http://talkislam.info/2010/03/16/a-m...any-has-decide , although I only rarely look at their discussions & even then just scroll through. In future even the Ottoman pillars of the mosque will be just in pictures? http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=47364003

Well, I hope all the developers, planners & architects really know what they're doing. I wouldn't mind staying in a cheap hotel (most buildings have air-conditioning right?) rather than fork my money for a room in the 2nd tallest building in the world & wasting some more in the malls esp. if I came for worship...

This has nothing to do with islamic countries not being allowed to build in an islamic style, but about the importane of sensitivity to context in such holy places, irrespective of the country.
In 50 years it will be a heritage building.

Too bad it's not in Lahore. Everyone on the other side of the border could check the time from anywhere.
