I just had an interesting - though slightly off-topic - thought: what if the Vatican would decide to construct a similar modern-day landmark near the current San Pietro cathedral in Rome? What would that building look like? How tall would it be?
Of course, that's all purely hypothetical: you can't even move an ordinary brick around in Rome without written permission by the state legislature.

It's not just the height. It seems to be built at an elevated position within the city, too.

but they leveled the hill pretty much before they built it. its main entrance is no higher than the ground around it. and from three sides (except from back side) it is no more higher than the ground around.

In this pic, mosque and Abraj are clearly higher than the buildings in the foreground, and look like they're also higher than the city in the background:

actually you are seeing a hill in the foreground (infront of the Abraj Al Bait) in the picture. the mosque is in the lowest part of a valley. this picture was taken from about 300 meters higher than the level of the mosque, still what you see in this picture is only the roof of the mosque (half of it), and the minarets which are 89 meters tall each.
