I understand the point about shade not being too bad a thing in a place as close to the Equator as Mecca but would that not be provided far more effectively by trees than by tall buildings? After all, with the sun almost directly overhead, buildings are not going to provide that much shade.

What I find strange is the complete lack of any greenery in the plans for the city but in Islamic tradition, gardens feature a great deal. Maybe the land is too precious for anything but real estate development but I couldn't imagine the Taj Mahal being completely surrounded by tall buildings with no natural landscaping.

Maybe it's just me, but I fail to see, in any of those pics, a single building that's taller than the mosque minarets. Sure, there are buildings that are at a higher altitude, but not taller. Even without those buildings, the hill would have been higher than everything around, but that hill was there before the mosque was built.

in case you missed, he said "KAABAH" not the minarets or even the Grand Mosque itself. and by the way, there has been in Makkah buildings taller than those minarets, even before Abraj al Bait.

Possibly, but not near the mosque, and certainly not looming 600 meters right over it

certainly not 600 meters, but the Makkah Hilton Hotel, which is as close to Kaaba as Abraj al Bait is, is actually taller than the minarets. its the building on the left in the picture below

WAQF (Islamic donation) from King Abdul Aziz Custodian of the holy mosques

Can anyone explain us what is written this ? I thought that Mecca land can't be sell, but only use for a limit time. So, how can it be offered by someone (King) ?

it says: "King Abdulaziz's (Founder of saudi) Endowment to the 2 Holy Mosques"

as all profits from this building goes to the maintenance of the 2 Holy mosques

Waqf dosen't translate into "donation" , but rather "endowment" .
the sign is a temporary one as we can see here , the real one will be installed later , I guess they rushed to put this fake sign because the king is spending the last 10 days of ramadan literally in the palace next to the Tower , they wanted to please him or show off or something .

I know it's not anywhere near April 1st ? but this is a joke isn't it ? a render......it can't be real......look at one block away.....shanties ??? the world has gone mad ..in some parts anyway ! Who is to occupy all this floor space in a place where no one would ever want to go except a one time visit because that's decreed if you are of that religion...which I respect...just not all the other add ons.

You have no idea about the amount of pilgrims visiting Mecca right? And you dont have any idea about the difference between Hadj and Umrah right? To answer your question, there are more than enough people to occupy all this floor space. Actually, there has to be more of these kind of towers to facilitate the people. Oh, and medina's are not shanty-towns.

there are people who repeat the pilgrimage every year. and if you read the news, millions of Muslims come to Makkah every year, the peak is in Hajj and Ramadan when the number can be as high as 3 million. and the city itself is 1.5 million.

Your right...I have no idea......! I don't even try to know what Hadj or Umrah are ? Where were all these people housed before this was built ?.or have they just appeared and now live a western lifestyle? I don't ever mean disrespect for any religion I just am amazed at any sudden transformation compared to places like New York where evolution has been over a long period not a handful of years...that's all ?.......I could say the same about cities like Shanghai in China.......amazing compared to the city 10 or 15 years ago.........

Exactly. I think the key questions are: how many pilgrims can afford staying at the Hilton, or the new Al-Bait complex? What kind of people will live in them, be it on a regular basis or just for the Hadj? How many people are, and were historically, hosted in little cheap hotels, or by muslim organizations? By answering this, one will grasp why the Saudis wanted to build these monsters - including the Hilton, built in the nineties (Hint: to differentiate between two kinds of pilgrims).
