While I understand you answer an off topic post with another off topic one, the "stupid arab" part is uncalled for. Think the guy is stupid? Don't bring ethnicity in it.

I will really try to make time and money for visiting Mecka next year, partly because of this tower, it's awesome!
I don't know how you pray but Mecca is off limit to non-Muslims (as well as Medina), so unless you are Muslim I don't think you can ever see this tower.

What do the bells in the clock tower sound like? Anyone hear them yet?

I just pointed at te core of those projects in Mecca and Medina: capitalism. No respect at all for history with their wahabi vision. Destroying history. And influencing people with their strange ideology. Walking in clothes that are not native for the mecca/medina invironment.

They spend lots of money, but have no moral at all. I love Syria and Lebanon much more: they have their own culture and history and respect it. And they fight against opression and israeli terror. While Su3oudiyye is fighting freedom and forbading everything and supporting israeli terror.
It's not a habit of mine to drift off-topic here but I just have to show how much I'm disgusted with the generalizations you're making about a country of 28m and an ideology respected -and/or- practiced by even a far greater number while in the meantime your sole source is a couple of trips you made to the Levant.
Know what you're talking about. Try understanding the Saudi culture and history (yes, there is one) and then come to have a civilised discussion [in a RELATED topic].
Now, I know the guy you were responding to wasn't much better but with your post you only showed how much you two have in common.

So they REALLY destroyed an ottoman fortress to make room for this thing? I just discovered it, that's just insane...
I mean if there's something not missing in this town is the space to build hotels. And they destroyed one of their few historic archtiectural evidences...
Come on...aren't you arabian upset with this?

And don't say i'm OT. We're talking about architecture and if you ask me the architectural value of this tower is equal to zero. It gets below zero once they destroyed an historic monument to build this tower.

no bells, just this sound

ignore the bird sounds at the beginning

i find the ottoman fortress to be much less important than the goal of developing the surroundings of the mosque (and expansion). the sand castle just an other old building like many others across saudi. useless. you should check real saudi heritage like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mada'in_Saleh

Non-Muslims to be allowed to live in part of Medina

@ Annibale: Although it saddens me that the fortress was demolished, the demolition was of need and not for joy. On another note: Saudi Arabia is a land rich of history and has antiquities dating back thousand of years (way far farther than an Ottoman remnant) so next time get your facts straight.

the "haram" area in madina is smaller than the one in Makkah, the one in Makkah is larger than the city its self. so non-muslims can live in the outskirts of the city of madina. but they can never go closer to the mosque or into the haram area.

Still it was avoidable. I admit i don't know Mecca, but wikipedia cites four main sights of which two have been demolished.
I find unconceivable to destroy an historic monument (and if it was reported on wiki it should have been one of the most important, not being wikipedia the best and deepest information source) to make room for an hotel. And i find strange that you take it so easy...

you don't now Makkah, but in 10 years, 10 Million people will pray in the mosque at the same time. i doubt a sand castle would be useful

in this picture 2.5 million only (ramadan month)

last year in (Hajj season) it was 4 million

by the way the tower is not just a hotel, it has huge prayer halls which is part of the expansion
