How far away can you be from that tower and still see what time it is?

Shouldn't there be less American brands? It looks like almost every store and restaurant is USA based. How about some European (Wiener Wald, Arther Treachers Fish and Chips, Antonios Pizza) and Chinese (?) AND MOST IMPORTANT your own local Arabian Peninsula brands, with local style and culture?
i know in SAUDI you can find almost all famous American brands, but believe me, Al Baik is the winner there. its an Arabian brand (owned by a Palestinian if i am informed correct)

i have been in Makkah so many times, and there is a place where there is all these American brands (Mc Donalds, KFC, Hardees..etc) along with Al Baik. and Al Baik is full with a big queue outside while only few people are inside other restaurants. it was funny to look at

there are thousands of non-american "brands" in Makkah, while the american stores can only be counted by hand. but don't forget that MUSLIM AMERICANS do exist.

I didn't mean to offend with the statements, it's just that from the pictures posted the opposite looks true. I would like to see more pictures inside the hotel complex showing Al Baik and other Arabian brand stores and restaurants.

Is there an incentive in Saudi Arabia for contracted construction companies to build faster and complete projects ahead of the deadline? In other words, are they rewarded for finishing super quickly? Looks like a lot of these projects are growing like bamboo.

construction is fast in this area because if they don't finish on time 4 Million people will not be able to do Hajj comfortably the next season. and the companies are dedicated to Makkah (they are muslims) more than anywhere else. but i'm not really sure if they get awarded for it, as muslims we know that god would award us in the after life thu :p

No, actually most roads are properly marked.

On another note: Saudis aren't socialists. We don't have a problem with "American food" or European brands. Saudi restaurant chains such as Herfy, Kudu, Al-Baik, etc. are all present there.
@ abumuhannadh: Al-Baik's owner is only Palestinian in origin. He's been Saudi for a very long time and he has no connections to the Palestinian territories whatsoever.

Again, get your facts straight. Non-Muslims weren't allowed in Mecca since the Ottoman times. I think you need to stop believing whatever you're told up there.

yeah , but there were some occasions where non-Muslims entered the two holy cites , the prophet him self used to receive delegations from non-muslim tribes in Madinah , and that's +1400 years ago , but that could be the exception and not the rule .
The ottomans and the Mamluks ,however, used to prevent non-muslims from entering the cities , so it's not a "Saudi twisted ideology" that's behind this ( I'm talking here to that (jb_nl) who doesn't seem to be able to get over his hate and Prejudice of Saudi Arabia , for god knows what political or sectarian reason that is ) .

but when the Quranic verse which forbids it came to the prophet, (makkah was all muslims by that time) non-muslims were not allowed to enter (allahu a3lam)
