Relatively new here. Been following it for years though. I just wanted to say that I agree with people who denounce this as a bit tacky. However I can't help but appreciate the architect's attempts at incorporating elements of Islamic architecture into such a massive building. It reminds me of the Woolworth Building a little where they incorporated gothic details on a massive scale. I think it is nice to see some decoration; some arches, detail purely for beauty's sake etc. Certainly the most interesting project right now in my opinion. Bravo Mecca for doing something a bit zany.

endowment because, al the money profited from this Hotel goes to the maintenance of the 2 holy mosques (makkah and madina), and this hotel is part of a project to increase pilgrims from 4 million to 10 million (saudi gives a limit to every country to how many ppl can get a visa to makkah, because the city can't hold more than 4 million, but this will change in the next 4 years)

CHANGE THE TITLE TO:

MECCA | Abraj Al-Bait Endowment | 601m | 1972ft | 95 fl | U/C

This forum is about the Abraj Al-Bait. Not about Saudi Arabian society.

Anyways, what's with all the control towers? Is there an airport nearby?

i don't think there is anything wrong with tacky on a huge scale...it has class... as well as being over the top.
i wouldn't want this built in my city but I'm glad that its been built somewhere
