I guess it has something to do with the white building in front of it.

Sure I know the meaning of the original emoticon, but the "winner by spire" on it is just too different to be used in the case of Abraj Al-Bait IMO. I can't imagine that someone standing in front of it would think "what a height cheater". Even without the very top, this would be a giant building with 95 tall storeys. Maybe the giant clock tier needs getting used to, but the crown above fits to it.

you really think that? i mean, was the building not planned to be destroyed when the rendering was done? i don't think so. it was a pretty ugly building compared to this monster.

This is one ridiculously huge project, and I understand the important function it will play in the hajj, but I'm sorry... I just cant get over its profound ugliness.

I can't think of any other reason. Look at this pic

The entrance is completely shifted to the left, although the area in front of the center is empty except for the old white building.

One thing Mecca lacks is proper planning. its like everything is decided on the spot.

WRONG! They're working on the roundness of the lower part of the spire, if you watch recent pics, you'll see two tilted irons "rods" (I think) around the spire

or taking a rest. it's the roof of the mosque. not the street. you can find people resting in the courtyard of the Mosque, too.
