The cannon will be positioned at the top of the highest hill, away from residential neighborhoods in Makkah, and is provided with sound-producing detonators. There are special security officers to take care of the cannon, which will be sent back to the store of the Tasks and Duties Administration in Makkah after the last shots announcing the arrival of Eid Al-Fitr. A total of 150 shots will be fired in the whole month.

In most Muslim countries, cannons are fired to announce the beginning of Ramadan and fast breaking time.

Ramadan Mubarak!
Thats not something new. The cannon is placed on Sulaimania mountain which is located near the 'Jannat-ul-Ma'la' cemetry, and its probably 1-2 km away from Masjid-al-Haram
And Ramadhan Mubarak to all the muslims on SSC.

IDK, probably 9-10 km. The same spot I use every single time to photograph the clock tower with my mobile phone camera.

You have to open the gallery by clicking RMB and "open in new tab/window", then old-type gallery is opened, when you can click RMB on the photo and click "copy picture's URL"

Don't know why, but this isn't proper picture's URL. It should have .jpg at the end.

Click the link in the bar at the top and press enter. It will show the picture in the old format. Right click and say copy URL. On the forum, use the picture button and paste URL.

24/7 live feed from Makkah ( an official saudi government channel dedicated to the grand mosque ) :
http://www.youtube.com/user/SaudiQur.../l/fW2u8LvnIwQ

you can see Abraj Al-bait every now and then .. the camera even zooms in on the clock sometimes ( especially during the time of Adhan or the call to prayer ).
it's a great way to see the towers progress in real time .
