What kind of messages will the giant banner billboard around the entire area under the clocks broadcast? Will it scroll like CNN or MSNBC news in Times Square?

Every city is "beautiful" at night, as you can't judge its architecture and merely see lights. Well, thanks to Abraj Al-Bait you now also have a building that is recognizable at night. For the better or the worse... Rather the latter.

I agree, wholeheartedly. Nicely worded.

This whole transformation of the city will be considered a major failure by many in some years and already is. Abraj Al-Bait is only the tip of the iceberg if you look at some of the megalomaniac projects for Mecca.
I see where you're coming from. What many forumers here seem to not understand however is that Historic Mecca has long been gone. Most buildings currently standing in the city aren't much older than the ones currently being built; the sense of an ancient and spiritual city was lost when around 95% of the city's heritage received a fate of destruction.

Personally, I'd like to view some of these projects as a step in the right direction and an attempt at fixing what's been corrupted and what was ill-planned. Projects such as Darb Al-Khalil, Jabal Omar, and the Redevelopment of Mecca's Central Area give me hope that in some years this whole transformation will be considered a success rather than a failure.

Makkah's beauty lies in the Grand Mosque and the hills filled with buildings and trees here and there. thats what i find most attractive in Makkah. and yes, the tunnels that go through one mountain then the other, when you drive in Makkah it is like 50% of the time you are under ground.

anyway, no Muslim will hate Makkah, the buildings are another story. Makkah was like any other Arab city until the modern hotels came up. if you wanna see how Makkah was in the old days, try looking for pictures of Jeddah Al Balad district (old Jeddah) or Old San'aa.

This is a forum, people exchange opinions and in your case you show very little open mind to other views.

I think that Makkah in its current state can become only better, not worse. I see very little to no buildings (Apartment Houses etc.) which would "qualify" as beautiful architecture. Right now Makkah is in a state of transformation and if it's really fitting all together, we might know only in the end.

For the photographers, can someone please make a clear picture from the street looking at the east or west facade above the clock during night?

I think Makkawi has been quite open-minded and respectfull towards different opinions. And that's clear at the first comment you quoted, I think you misunderstood it.

The first comment was made after the second one fyi. There are way too many discussions here regarding different opinions. Obvious trolls not included and therefore I see little need in commenting every opinion with your own over and over. I'd rather see more picture of this impressive building (beautiful or not) and according to the moderation I think that's what this thread is about.

As for the statement... nobody "owns" the judge hammer if something is beautiful or not, that was the reason for the quote in the end and if someone says only a certain group of people "can" judge it's not open minded.

I think this was enough OT and I won't comment any further on this.

I'm the #1 fan of these tunnels , especially the Tandbawi tunnel (given below) which is decorated with lights at night in Ramadhan and Hajj

One light looks a little detoured. But the pictures are still amazing!
