Whatever happened to the buildings planned behind this? Are they being built?

Maybe this could change in the future if planned developments mentioned above are carried out...

Is Mecca looking like Manhattan?

video report 2:41 min : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15801336

21 November 2011

It is Islam's most holy site and millions make a pilgrimage to the Grand Mosque at Mecca every year.

But Mecca is also now being compared to Manhattan with the pace of high-rise buildings that are dotting the skyline.

Luxury hotels are being built by the local authority to provide accommodation for the rich visitors that come to the city.

But some Saudi archaeologists are angry than historical sites and buildings are being destroyed to make way for them.

Ahmed Maher, from BBC Arabic Television, reports from the city.

if they compared Dubai with Manhattan, that would be fine, but Makkah? get out of town!
how does just one skyscraper make it any thing similar to Manhattan? the Clock tower does have some resemblance to the Empire State Building. but that's it!

also mecca built it as a hotel, most buildings in new york are office towers. there is only one thing that compares the building to new york office skyscrapers. there wasn't much space so higher was the way to go

Every significant urban center calls itself the center of the earth

The earth has 1,000 centers by now
