From the renderings I thought this was going to be the worlds ugliest skyscraper, but it actually came out pretty darn nice...especially like the pictures from afar.

Abraj Al-Bait is an imposing structure indeed and towers over this city of 2 million residents.

It's a real pity, though, that the historic Ottoman fortress of Ajyad had to be demolished (instead of being renovated) for Abraj Al-Bait to come up.

The topping out of the Abraj Al-Bait heralds an era of skyscrapers in the historic city of Mecca.

As announced by King Abdullah, Mecca will become a skyscraper city in the near future, with the approval of several skyscrapers surrounding the Abraj Al-Bait and the Ka'ba.

A render of this massive project below-

That render is not even close to the current development plan.

While it is true that many buildings are being demolished, that article is pure propaganda and does not address the topic in a useful manner. Rather than talking about options and tradeoffs involved with urban planning, it resorts to an entirely negative smear campaign.

Would you mind posting the a link to the master plan? Sorry if I'm a bit off topic but have looked everywhere for a final plan and cannot find any renders ANYWHERE
