It looks as though they held a design competition amongst the local schoolkids for this tower....and the eight year old won it.

Definitely. But they designed this building while planning for the mass of large hotel towers that are going to go behind it. I'm hopeful that when they're built the main tower of this one won't look so silly from the back and sides.

But even considering that, it was still a VERY odd decision to make the center tower so flat-looking from the sides. I can't guess at why they did it like that, except that maybe they wanted a height over 600m but couldn't justify the floor space (or cost of the floor space) that a proper square cross section would produce. I completely understand the allure of a 600m+ height, but I think they went too far (aesthetically) in this case.

You are right but i like the top of this tower much. The idea of Hotel buildings around tall tower is making it little odd and massive but still my favorite from Arab.

Not only for this reason, i still think this building is too close, too intrusive and too disrespectful.

It is that kind of thing that 30 years in the future we will be ashamed how we accepted and even become enthusiastic of ANYthing made to glory another kind of Gods, green god$...

You kind of wished the goverment would of spent the money on helping the less fortunate and building the infrastructure instead of joining the "mine is bigger than yours'' competition.

Obviously meant to be viewed from the front...looks awkward from other angles.

Wonder why it doesn't directly face the kaabaa?

I don't think it will create disrespect for Muslims, Kaaba is Our Religious place and we respect it. This tower is not built for any compeition but it is only for a big clock for Pilgrims who came here from every edge of the World.
And if it can disrespecting then it cant built because Allah has taken the responsiblity to Protect his home. And Allah knows better.

I'm sorry to say this, but please just grow up you ignorant fool!

We live in the 21st century, I dedicated my life to knowing the meaning of life, of where we came from. That's why I studied physics and now work at CERN.

It's ignorant people like you who are slowing down the progression of knowledge in this world. You and others may see it not a problem you saying 'God knows better', but that simple sentence causes so much harm.

Please, it's fine to appreciated religions, I myself as an atheist have read the Bible and the Quran, and personally find the Quran a beautiful poetic text, much more than the bible.

Please grow up, and stop being a sheep, the world will be a better place for it.

This turned out really nice, but it does look rather alone.
I hope they end up building the Jibar Rawabi Abraj Al Bait Towers behind this.
