I think it is so ugly. I was speaking to a muslim friend yesterday and he thinks the same as me: it is a complete act of greed and show-off to build such structures next to any holy site. It is such a tight area for all the pilgrims that flock to this site that what should have been done would be a enlargement of the prayer area, not an ugly skyscraper.
Plus, you have a thing that is much bigger and that draws much more attention than the Qaba, which shouldn't be the purpouse. I criticise this and any structure in any holy site, either muslim, catholic, jewish, buddhist or maradonian. Build it in the city's outskirts, outside the historic centre, but not there. Bloody petrodollars.

"will have to"
what a stupid mentality to impose something. What about answering necessities instead of satisfying egos?

It's a massive hotel due to the huge numbers of pilgrims. But what they are building it for is still ridiculous.

I heard the problem is not the size but that it is expensive!

Does anyone have any idea about price per night?

Is it true that Mecca doesn't allow non-muslims to enter the city?

Lino, it's as simple as that: We don't care about what you think, since you have never been to Mecca and you clearly don't know what's going on.

The hotel should be free. Religion is above financial gain. The builders of this complex did it to help Muslims go to the spot where their God focuses...not for money. So I proclaim from this day forth everything here will be at no charge and open to all with love and peace !

I've never been there and that's why I asked my muslim friend, who totally opposes to it. Such religious sites, whichever religion is represented there, should be free of distractions at some distance. I hated it when I was at St. Peter's Square and saw all the sellers.

If you "guys" don't care why are you replying? Chill out angry pal, a picture is enough to see, like if only being there gave you the right to express your opinion. You see... the forum isn't yours, nor other's thoughts so speak for yourself.

I myself honestly like it, it is way different to the rest of the supertalls. The politic, religious and economic background behind this project is not of my concern.

I don't love this building but I don't hate it either. I mean, is it really that much worse than Big Ben in London? I always though that was cheesy. Plus Big Ben is not historical. It is only a little over a hundred years old, build in neo Gothic, and for the same reason as this building, to show off.

My only concern for this building is cost. It is huge and filled with a lot of "dead space". At least 20 stories are nothing but clockwork, and that clock too will be extremely expensive to maintain. Those giant cogs will wear out real quick. You can't cheat physics. The density of metal does not change with mass, but the greater mass will definitely be compromised by density. In a little pocket watch the little cogs can last forever, but giant multi ton cogs will wear themselves out quickly. That clock will break down a lot. Eventually they will have to switch to electric motors and scrap all that metal mechanism that they spent so much money on. It is a beautiful sculpture, but its functionality will not last.

Then all the lights, and keeping the glass clean, and all the other issues that come with such a tall building, I just don't see how it is ever going to be profitable considering its size and complexity to capacity ratio. I hope I'm wrong but only time will tell.

Big Ben has much better form, proportions and facade, imo.

I would assume they have an electric engine for the clock already... I think the expensive rooms and the sheer number of pilgrims will pay enough for it.
