And what about the clock? What material would the hands and the bearings be? The minute hand must be 20 metres long! I don't believe a clock that size is possible until I see it with my own eyes. (Well, they don't allow me to see it with my own eyes anyway. Bastards.)

Are they sure they know what they are doing?

If they can get these 45.2 meter blades to turn 28rpm, I'm sure the clock will be fine.

Blade diameter = 93m, hub height = 75m, total height = 121.5m

BTW, they didn't get them to turn right the first time, all the transmissions have to be replaced, maybe they'll get it right the second time (looks out window) 2 appear to be spinning, so 2 are fixed. They were prototypes, so I guess a problem wasn't unlikely.

LOL. Because noone has done it this big yet. Everything must be for the first time. Boeings 747 don't fly the sky from stone age, they also had the first flight and some people didn't believe its possible for them to take off.

eMKay, good example. I think there is nothing impossible about this.

That is a silly comparison as any engineer will tell you (and yes, I am an engineer). In the case of the wind mills, it is the 45m blades that are turning the the centre shaft. In the case of a clock, the centre shaft would have to turn the arm. BIG difference.

Yep. And the wind mill wings are balanced, the clock hands are not. Even bigger difference.

What exactly was so dumb? Wondering about the new miracles in technology?

Well, we'll see if they can build it. This is interesting to follow anyway.

Well obviously otherwise they wouldn't be building it.

Sorry for being away again for long time but I am really busy nowadays, that is why i could not update this thread.

First of all I wonder how come you guys are not still sure that such clock can be manufactured and installed on such huge skyscraper!!

first of all the designer already finished the design with consideration of size and weight of the clock and it got approved and I have seen a copy of that shop drawing.

Is it logic that king of saudi gov. announces such it everywhere in media without any approved proposal of the design? This is not logic for sure.

There was no work in hajj season as we all know since the gov. stops the construction work in the surrounded area of the holy mosque to protect the pilgrimes.

The work just started last 40 days after Hajj and to see the progress, here it is...

First of all this picture has been taken from the backside of the project to be able to see the main tower (Hotel).

1- The Hotel (Main Tower) is going up so fast as we can see and it is supposed to be clear from all sides within 3 months max. inshallah (God willing).

2- Hajar tower needs almost 3 months too to be completed 100% inshallah.

No Progress!! Yes I can see it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is going up so so so fast and the situation really has been changed within last month since most of the manpower of the project are working seriously to finish the main tower.

Hey Dream, what do you mean by saying that the hotel tower will be clear from all sides in 3 months? will it be higher than the other towers?

It looks better right now that it will once its completed IMO. The building is just too big and bulky for it to fit in.

That's true! I've been asking for a picture of this side for a LONG time, however, no one was posting as it shows show this complex completely blocks out the Holy Kaaba.

No Riyadhi will not be higher than other but it will be clear when you look at it while you are in the holy mosque. Now you can not see it and many do not know that there is one tower rising up and many are asking about the main tower but after 3 months inshallah, anyone will notice it.

As I said before, the clock should be installed in the first quarter of 2009 and it is final decision as I have been told. Therefore, there is no chance for delaying the work on the main tower at all inshallah (God willing).

Wow, they really want to build it fast. The clock should be in the height around 450 meters right? And is there some official floor count for the main tower somewhere? Didn't find it. Thanks.

there is official number of floors yes but they are adding them when they increase the height. Height has been increased many times. I will try to check soon inshallah (God willing) the new number of floors.

I hope it will become the second tallest tower in the world with the highest observation deck.
