The Kaaba (the black thing) was dedicated to a pagan god Hubal, a Nabatean deity, and contained 360 idols which represented the days of the year, and were effigies of the Arabian pantheon of gods before they became monotheistic. Now, it's basically empty except for a marble floor and some Quranic inscriptions on the walls and some minor decorative tapestries. The corner of it has a black stone that Muslims believe was once white, but has since turned black because it supposedly absorbs sins. Muslims on haaj attempt to kiss the stone (like Muhammed did), but if they can't get close they point at it each time they pass and say something... I don't recall what. Essentially, the big black box is the center of Mecca, and is the focal point of prayers of Muslims throughout the world (hence the concentric circles as seen above).

We also believe that it was initially built by Abraham and his son Ishmael and it was monotheistic then turned into idol worshiping.

Well, you can believe whatever you want, that's the wonderful thing about fantasies... You just re-write reality in your head. However, clearly Arab culture was paganistic, and in fact, Allah was just one among many pagan gods (the 365). He was one of the Meccan's tribal gods, and received ascendancy because of Muhammed's efforts. The Kaaba used to house the deities, and was a focal point of peaceful tribal interaction. Hence the reason why it's still in use. The pagan aspects were repalced with monotheistic aspects, but the Arab notions of peace and unity are embodied by the Kaaba in addition to its links to Arab history and identity.

This isn't trolling. This is a relevant discussion of the Kaaba since it was brought up, and since it's a focal point of attention for this building. Please don't address me on a personal level.

This is trolling. You are talking about irrelevant thing here. The Kaaba is every Muslims' focal point and the direction of thier prayers. We believein One God only..

not 365..

not 1365..

just one... Dont know where you get ur facts.

We (over 1.5 billion people also) believe it was built by Abraham as a monolithic worship. If you believe the Smurfs built it as a castle, its up to you...

I thought that you have sort of logic, but after this point for sure you are just saying BS

actually Arabs before Islam worshiped those idols as a mediate between them and the god (Allah), and yes they do believe in god
and (Allah) wasn't an Idol before islam

In fact Allah was just one of the idols (identified as Hubal or Ilah by others), among other idols of Makkah, worshiped in what the they believed to be a stone that had come from the moon (a meteorite or a volcanic rock?) It was the greatest idol of the Quraysh tribe. Each tribe had its own deity. The idol worship included even human sacrifices In order to gain Meccans, Muhammad allowed other idol worship as intercessors, in what is known as "the satanic verses".
