My intent is to stimulate thought on the infrastructure that must accommodate so many visitors ... hotel rooms, restaurants, medical facilities, transportation, etc.
Walt Disney World covers a size of 47 square miles, that's roughly twice the size of Manhattan! Its obligatory for a Muslim to do the Hajj at least once in their lifetime (if they can afford it), so imagine if even 1% of 1.6 billion people were to descend on this mosque at the same time. So it makes sense to control number. And because demand outstrips supply, it can be really expensive to go to Hajj.

I don't like the way the crescent is mounted on top of this tower. It looks like there is a huge statue of Satan (with cape and big horns) standing on top of the tower and guarding the islamic world.

I thought something like this is more common:

Now I get it. It's Sauron, on top of the tower of Mordor. After all, christians don't just walk into Mordor.

I wonder where the other of the Two Towers is. Here maybe:

the proper name is: Barud-dur, or the Dark Tower.
I think I remember the model used in the LOTR movies was set to depict a 1,500 m-tall edifice.

Why do you say it's Barud-dur if the link above already includes the right spelling Barad-dûr? Just a typo, maybe?

OMG, there are some wonderful examples of middle-eastern architecture out there (in cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, Baghdad, Mazar-e-Sharif and other cities across Iran and Iraq), and instead the Saudis choose a horrible mix of styles (most of it looks like Communist-Realism to my untrained eye).

OK people, read the rules and read them well. in particular number 2 applies here:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/announ...hp?f=902&a=482

We're coming down hard on this now and any bullshit nationalistic comment (or any other comment of that sort) and the person who posted it will get an infraction. If someone is posting a bullshit nationalistic comment in response to another bullshit nationalistic comment then they too will receive an infraction. 3 of those and a user gets brigged.

Have a nice day

I wish i could go there someday and visit the observation deck. Some time ago Christians and Jews were allowed in Mecca. Maybe Saudi Arabia will open itself a little bit again. But i think they need first to control the masses that are allowed in Mecca. If the number of visitors is limited to 6mio it`s no wonder that no nonmuslims are allowed in that city.

It's not so crowded outside of their festival season.

And I don't think non-muslims would even want to go there in the middle of that mayhem.

Tents on top

Any photos or renderings of what it will look like under the canopy on top ?

Is this the same type of canopy material used here in Chicago for Navy Pier ?
