YardMaster:

As far as im concerned, from an architecthural point of view the whole area needs to be rebuilt and planned so that the more important parts can be preserved and so that it becomes safer for so many people, and can house them more comfortably. The streets need to be broadened etc.

Its so cramped today.

I dont understand why they dont do that, its not like they dont have enough finances for it.

I have been to Makkah many times for Umrah (minor pilgrimage) and inspite of being a skyscraper fan did not feel distracted or influenced by the towers while performing the rituals. Only time I did spend time to inspect it was after I finished the rituals. And I find that I am one of very few people looking at the towers, the rest of people are not interested even when they are not engrossed in the rituals and talking to one another. I am a non Saudi, non Arab Muslim.

This is true. I believe that after 200 years, this would be just another building. But I believe that Kaaba will remain the center of attraction for the Muslims forever.
Good to see the updates.

My goodness - this would have to be the ugliest building I have ever seen in my entire life - a cross between the English Houses of Parliament and 50's Stalinist architecture. I know the Saudi government is philosphically somewhere between 18th century England and Stalinist Russia, but surely to goodness Saudi architects were schooled in more enlightened educational institutions. Words really do fail me on this one.
