And Rome? Paris? London? Madri? This project is unfortunate.

What's "pathetic" about it? The design on that picture looks like the cooling system in termite hills. Doesn't matter if Mecca attracted four BILLION people each year, they could at least think of something less hideous to house them.

2. Mecca simply must be radically developed to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Unless you have an area that is completely undeveloped (e.g., sandy parts of Dubai), new development will displace the old neighborhoods and their "charm".

3. This project looks like a decent compromise.

4. Too many westerners are pro-charm and anti-development. Where do they expect to fit all the billions of extra people that didn't exist 50 years ago? The world now has about 7 billion people. There were 2.5 billion fewer people when I was born (and I am not that old).

5. Many of these folks are more affluent, and they will not live in tents and hovels. They will no longer squeeze 10 people into a small room. So we have two choices. Sprawl, or height. Stack 'em high, or spread 'em wide. The latter solution is "sprawl". It means letting each family take up a hundred square meters or so of land, possibly a lot more. The better solution is keeping a small footprint on the ground, and stacking 70 floors of nice apartments on top of each other.

In conclusion, Mecca has to do something. This project is not a bad idea. There might be better ideas, but it's simply not possible to maintain the status quo. There are too many people.

In the Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said tall buildings will be competing each other..

Alhamdolillah, he was right!! This is a sign...

oh please...a sign of bad things to come more like, Where is Abraj Al Bait in this masterplan? It seems somewhat austere the masterplan, it looks like some massive space dock or something? awaiting for something to fill the void so to speak.

Come on. At first you seem to catch a glimpse of the truth, when you correctly point at the reason these mega-projects were spawned in the first place - i.e., to introduce a difference of status between affluent pilgrims and poor pilgrims.
The next moment you say it's an issue of room (never heard this was such a problem). You should have stayed with your first intuition!
