Emkay to build first green building in Cyberjaya
Thursday, 26 November 2009 15:23

CYBERJAYA: An office premise to be built by Emkay Group via Joyful Getaway Sdn Bhd will be the first building in Malaysia to be accredited with the internationally recognized Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) GOLD certification.

The RM120 million project which involves the CONSTRUCTION [] of a 323,000 sq ft building, will also mark the first green building in Cyberjaya.

Emkay Group chairman Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal told a press conference here today said that the building would be leased out to Shell Shared Service Centre (SSSC).

Having a green building, he said, would not only increase the asset value of the property but also lower the operational cost through conservation of energy and water.

"The move towards green building is very important as it is going to provide a healthier and safer environment for the occupants.

"Green TECHNOLOGY [] is the way of the future. It will change not only your approach towards the design and construction of property but also in the way we occupy and manage property," he said after the signing of the lease agreement between Joyful Gateaway and SSSC Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd.

Shell Malaysia chairman Datuk Saw Choo Boon said the signing of the lease agreement confirmed a planned change in Shell Malaysia's physical footprints.

The completion and occupation of the building by 2011 and the same of its accomodations in KL Sentral by 2012 would be the outcome of a rigorous evaluation process that is based on Shell's technical, environmental, social and financial requirements, he said.

"With these two offices, Shell businesses and service centres in the Klang Valley will occupy only two premises from the 10 physical locations today.

"This move will enable us to find synergies and cost savings through economies of scale. We will also be able to gain greater collaboration, thus the ability to respond faster to the needs of the customers in the region," he said.

The Cyberjaya building will have five levels of office space and three levels of sub-basement for car parking.

The original concept for the building was based on two individual office blocks flanking a central courtyard. However, due to the end-user's requirement, it has morphed into a U-shaped building where the connection between the two blocks are provided at the rear, thus maintaining the look of two separate buildings from the front. — Bernama

Satyam Computer Services Ltd, a leading global consulting and information technology

CYBERJAYA: Satyam Computer Services Ltd, a leading global consulting and information technology services provider, has announced that its Global Solutions Centre (GSC) here is fully operational.

This marked the first phase of the rollout of Satyam's Global Delivery Campus in Malaysia.

Satyam founder and chairman B. Ramalinga Raju said the facility would become the company's largest software hub outside India.

"The GSC is already staffed by 300 (mostly Malaysian) IT engineers, who support Satyam's Asean, Middle Eastern and US customers," he told reporters after the GSC launch here.

Also present were Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Deputy Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha, and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali and chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali.

Ramalinga said Satyam's progress with its GSC accelerated consolidation of its Global Delivery Model 2.0, an integral part of the company's strategy to provide distributed delivery capability for global customers.

GDM 2.0 calls for components of a large-scale projects to be completed wherever it makes the most business sense, rather than having an entire programme take place in a single facility, he said.

This approach, according to him, delivers significant cycle time and cost reductions, in addition to quality enhancement.

Ramalinga said the Malaysia facility also reflected the company's commitment to create an alternative workforce, multicountry model and a global delivery approach offering customised business solutions.

He said the facility would be integrated with other Satyam's GSCs across the globe, serving as a major software development centre to bring solutions to market more quickly via the company's low-risk global delivery model.

Ramalinga said the facility is expected to create more than 500 jobs for Malaysian graduates over the next 12 months, with the number increasing to 2,000 in the next few years.

"We consider this facility to be a significant part of Satyam's commitment to multi-dimensional investments in Malaysia, an excellent alternative for solutions development," he said.

He also said that Malaysia was chosen because of the country's advanced infrastructure, rich IT talent pool, competitive cost environment and favourable business climate.

The latest facility is a high-tech centre featuring state-of-the art infrastructure and video-conferencing facilities.

Equipped with high-end security features such as biometric (fingerprint) identification, the GSC also has three training labs and round-the-clock access to Satyam's global knowledge repository.

The opening of the facility followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December last year between Satyam and MDeC, which oversees the MSC Malaysia programme.

Satyam's development and delivery centres in the United States, Canada, Britain, Hungary, Eqypt, the United Arab Emirates, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia serve 570 clients, including one-third of the US Fortune 500 companies.
Mahindra Satyam's global expansion begins in Cyberjaya
By Azlan Abu Bakar Published: 2009/12/02

MAHINDRA Satyam, the new brand entity of India-based Satyam Computer Services Ltd, a global consulting and information technology services provider, has chosen Malaysia as the venue to kick off its international expansion.

Its senior vice-president for Asia Pacific, Rohit Gandhi, said its Global Solutions Centre (GSC) in Cyberjaya, Selangor, will serve as the group's largest technology development and delivery facility outside of India.

The group's other similar centres are located in the US, Canada, Brazil, the UK, Hungary, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, India, China, Singapore and Australia, servicing more than 400 customers worldwide.

"As a country-specific investment strategy, we will move more global software development and delivery operations to the GSC to serve customers from all around the world including those in Malaysia," he said.

Rohit said this latest development takes place five months after Tech Mahindra Ltd gained control of the Hyderabad-based software company, when the latter plunged into a financial crisis in January 2009 following accusations that Satyam had inflated revenue and profit figures for several years.

Mahindra Satyam is part of the US$6.3 billion (RM21.36 billion) Mahindra Group, a global industrial conglomerate and one of the top 10 industrial firms based in India.

Speaking to reporters after announcing Mahindra Satyam's expansion plan, Rohit said the new facility will help boost the group's range and export of software development services in the global market.

"By focusing on providing a full range of both mainstream business and technology functions like remote infrastructure management outsourcing, business process outsourcing, software services as well as some specialised software testing, the new GSC substantially ramps up our range and export of offshore delivery capabilities from Malaysia," he said.

Rohit said since Tech Mahindra took over Satyam last April, the group has managed to rope in 40 new customers worldwide, noting that it did not lose a single client in Southeast Asia and Asia Pacific.

"The only customer that pulled out from the group's client list was a US-based financial institution," he said, noting that it currently serves 20 customers in Malaysia.

Rohit said the group is in talks with at least eight potential clients from Malaysia and abroad,

"We expect to conclude some of these deals by the first half of 2010," he said, adding that the group has plans to penetrate other markets in the region and set up operations there soon.

"We have concluded phase one that covers Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. In phase two, which will be implemented soon, we plan to penetrate markets like the Philippines and Vietnam," he said.

100-storey skyscrapers planned for Kuala Lumpur

2009/12/07

By Vasantha Ganesan and Presenna Nambiar

KULA LUMPUR: Three sites in the city have been identified for the development of iconic structures to spur growth in the economy.

Sources say they are Dataran Perdana in Jalan Davis, the area surrounding Stadium Merdeka and the vicinity of the Matrade Centre in Jalan Duta.

All the plots of land are privately owned. Two belong to governmentlinked companies — Pelaburan Hartanah Bumiputera Bhd and Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) — while the Naza group owns 25ha in the vicinity of the Matrade Centre.

Economists were recently briefed by the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department on the implementation of the iconic projects, as part of efforts to boost the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Even though the actual designs of the three structures have not been finalised, two appeared to have a 100-storey building each.

This could rival the highest structure in the country — the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers, completed in 1997 at a cost of US$1.2 billion (RM4.05 billion).

While it is understood that the design for such a skyscraper is included in the original development master plan for the 25ha site around the Matrade centre, another source claimed that a 100-storey building is to be built near Stadium Merdeka, owned by PNB.

Bank Islam Malaysia chief economist Azrul Azwa said: “The key thing is the huge cost of the development and what the government’s role will be in this.

“There needs to be a costbenefit analysis of the projects to ensure they not only give short-term benefits to GDP but also help the economy in the long run.” RSP Architect’s Hud Bakar said a 100-storey building, on average, would cost 50 per cent more per square foot than a normal high-rise building, depending on the actual design.

Real estate agent Previndran Singhe of Zerin Properties said: “It is good to have iconic developments. But we should do away with the perception that iconic developments mean tall buildings.”
