Hernesaari has been a dull piece of undeveloped industrial area in otherwise fabulous location. Now majority of those factory halls are going to get demolished and the area will finally get what it deserves - decent re-development.

Here are the schemes:

>> Naapurustoryhmä 1
>> Naapurustoryhmä 2
>> Arkkitehtuurikoulu Ark, lasten ja nuorten suunnitelma
>> Arkkitehdit Anttila & Rusanen Oy, Ramboll Finland Oy
>> Trojan Trojan Wendt / Brunow & Maunula / Wes & Partner / ARGUS
>> Helin & Co, Loci

Anttila & Rusanen Oy Ramboll Finland Oy is clearly the best if you ask me. I had to pick a few pictures from their PDF:

Love it!

Anttila & Rusanen's plan seems awful waste of land if you ask. I prefer the other two.

I like the Trojan Trojan Wendt / Brunow & Maunula / Wes & Partner / ARGUS plan best. It's the only one those visions that actually aims to be urban. The other ones just seem like the architects just let their mind go wild, without actually thinking what the area needs to be interesting, density.

By the way (for those that don't know), Hernesaari is the location of the Helipad that hosts the helicopters that operate between Tallinn and Helsinki. I think ^that would make for quite a dramatic setting to land in.

Now if they could only incorporate my idea of a highrise high enough to see Tallinn from, in to this plan, it would be near perfect.

As long as these suburbanites don't manage to hijack the discourse I see Hernesaari going far.

the planning of anttila & rusanen is by far the best in my opinion. although the houses look very... boring, and they'd make the area quite unattractive. taller houses would fit in more, though i don't know if there'd be demand for these...

There was discussion about light rail in page 6. Im sure there wont be light rail built to the center of helsinki cos there already is the metro tunnel and a local train tunnel will be built later. New fast light rail should go underground in the center and a new underground station costs some 30 million euro. Best is to extend the existing rail systems. Eventually there will be metro and local train tunnel loops covering the south, mid and north central districts. It's going to be easy to extend these, as all is needed to dig another tunnel and connect the tracks to the loop/s.

Light rail in Finland is not uncommon but yep it hardly exists. In helsinki region fast light rail will be built to replace the Jokeri I and II bus lines. Jokeri I will see rail in 10-15 years, Jokeri II in 20-30 years. Also Turku and Tampere are looking light rail options as their mass transit. There is no need to bring fast light rail to the center of Helsinki.

None of those Hernesaari plans didn't exactly blow my mind, but the Wendt plan and the Helin & Co. plan please my eyes the most.

Helin & Co:

I like this plan.

I wonder which tram is planned to serve Hernesaari. The city council was discussing about taking the new tram line 9 all the way to eira/kaivopuisto so maybe that's the tram line theyre planning on extending to Hernesaari.

This image heavily suggests that it's the line 9 instead of possible extending the line 1/1A.

Here there are some new renders of Kalasatama (I posted them as links because the images are too big):

I like the shapes of the curved buildings. Have the architects made sketches of the look of every building or is this still "only" a city plan. Helsinki need more urban areas like this. The city center is too small for the future exansion of the city I think.

Huh, it's too small to be extended? I think it is small and needs to be extended. The Western Harbor-, Kalasatama- and Central Pasila-projects should go a long way to achieve that, though more is always welcome.

As for these new plans, I continue my crusade for more density and think the small houses between the Tropaion buildings and the power plant suck, big time. Since KSV seems so eager to get to build town houses, that gap could maybe be a nice place for some, anything other than 1-2 story homes.

Another area that is going to get re-developed is Etelä-Hermanni.

Some sketches:

Rialtonkuja:

Sörnäistenkatu:

To me the general plan looks way too suburban. And heck, do they call that architecture? Are we still living in the 60's or what?

Fortunately the area is surrounded by Vallila and Merry old Kallio so it will most likely have more urban vibe than a cemetery.

Looks like Etelä-Hermanni will be one hell of a boring area. Especially the Sörnäistenkatu plan is ridiculous.. Congrats for choosing the very wrong track

As I understand it, Hermanni is to the west of Arabianranta, which is comparatively nice neighbourhood. I guess the city planner saw no reason to spend money on Hermanni, cause it won't be very visible from any direction anyway.

Etelä-Hermanni is far from Arabianranta, the map I posted above is a bit misleading. Made this very quickly but you get the idea:
