Citizen’s group seeks reply to PICC feedback
Friday February 19, 2010 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...503&sec=nation GEORGE TOWN: Engineer Tan Seng Hai has urged Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to reply to feedback provided by a group of concerned citizens against the proposed RM50mil Penang International Convention Centre (PICC) in Relau. Tan, who has initiated an online petition, said he submitted copies of the feedback to Lim’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik on Jan 15 but there was no reply. He also gave copies to Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) secretary Patahiyah Ismail and state executive councillor Abdul Malik Abul Kassim. “It has been slightly over a month since the petition was submitted to Lim and others,” Tan said when contacted here yesterday. He said the issue had suddenly died down as there was no news on whether the state government was going ahead with the project. It was reported on Jan 4 that Tan hoped to raise at least 2,000 signatures against the PICC by Jan 15 via the online petition. A check showed that a total of 451 people had signed the petition titled “Campaign Against Building the PICC.” The petition is available at www.petitiononline.com/picc2010/petition.html. Tan had questioned the rationale of the project, since a RM1.1bil world-class convention is being planned at Penang Times Square, expected to be completed by 2015. When contacted, Abdul Malik said the state government was still studying the proposal. “We will make a decision soon,” he added. In the petition, Tan had raised his concern over the state government’s directive to the MPPP to build the PICC. The signatories felt that the MPPP had reported a projected budget deficit of RM40mil for this year, and the PICC’s reported cost of more than RM50mil raised concerns.
