Well to be honest that is something straight out of the previous century and it's quite embarassing that you still have those in 2015. Normal recorded voices (like in the video posted above) has been the new standard pretty much everywhere for many decades, for good reasons.

Conductor's announcements (non-recorded) tend to sound arrogant and hostile - like it's my fault the 7 train is not running under the drink this weekend?

House Moves To Cut Metro Funding By $50 Million

"Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted to cut Metro's funding by $50 million, which would be used for safety upgrades, prompting outrage by several local politicians."

"For the past six years, Metro has been funded $150 million by the federal government to be used for safety upgrades, as it has been authorized under the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008. That law also requires a dollar-for-dollar match of $50 million each from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia."

In-case you haven't noticed, the House has been filled with idiots since 2010.

Washington Metro may introduce a full refund for service refused within 15 minutes.

http://www.washingtonian.com/blogs/c...-on-trains.php

Quote:
The Metro board’s finance committee will consider adding to its fiscal 2017 budget language stating that people who enter a rail station but exit before boarding a train within 15 minutes will not be charged a fare. On the surface, that seems encouraging: people won’t have to pay for trains they don’t ride.

But there’s a cost to this sudden act of generosity. Metro estimates that “same-station entry/exit transactions” account for 0.5 percent of all rail transactions per month, with as many as 10,000 incidents on the weekdays with the most service interruptions. As those who have bailed on Metro know, the service collects $2.15 from people who double back through the fare gates during rush hours and $1.75 during off-peak times, accounting for $2 million of its annual revenue.

I'm all for that. There have been times recently where train headways have been upwards of 40(!) minutes. Even when headways were "only" 20-30 minutes, trains were so packed at the city core that they couldn't be boarded there. WMATA, of course, had endless excuses.

A metro system shouldn't have a wait longer than 10 minutes any time it's running unless it's in the middle of the night on a 24 hour system. 15 is pretty good for a commuter rail though.

IMHO, Washington's Metro is kind of a hybrid commuter rail and subway system, though it seems to be lurching more toward the former than the latter. 15-20 minutes was the weekend standard on Metro at one time. In the past decade, weekend frequencies have gotten lower and also less predictable. Weekday frequencies have been less affected but are also down.
